    So, who's got the oldest, slowest, crappiest rig online? I'm surfing right along with a 486DX with a 33.6 modem, running windows 95 and internet explorer 3.0! Can anyone beat that? Also where can I find a free internet browser or upgrade that will run in windows 95, that will allow me to access my yahoo e-mail account?

    I'd answer you now, but you wouldn't be able to read my response until tomorrow! I'll send my message via carrier-pigeon! :D

    I had a 486 about 3 years ago. Got me enough service to do ebay and earn money to get my current rig.

    See ya tomorrow, and Welcome to Major Geeks! :D

    Try Netscape 4.0 or IE 5.5 or:
    Minimum configuration for Opera 7 without Java:

    * Any system running Windows 95 (or higher) operating system
    * 9 MB of free disk space (maybe less if installing from CD)
    * 9600 bps modem

    K-Meleon system requirements:
    * Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server
    * 32 MB RAM minimum
    * 5 MB of free hard disk space for download. 11.0 MB of free hard disk space for installation.
    * While a Pentium level processor is recommended, K-Meleon can run on a 486 system that meets the minimum RAM requirements.

    Well, the DX means you have either a 25, or 33 or a DX2 running 50 or 66 MHZ. Not powerful enough to do squat.

    I have an old P5 133 Laptop that has Linux Mandrake, Sound, and an external 56K Supra modem. I had Real player in it and the sound is not bad. It did not keep up with multitasking as it did not have much memory.

    It has not had a battery charge since I bought the current 933 system, recently payment free.

    I see new systems for $459 in the ads. Also the day after Thanksgiving many of the computer stores Compost USA and Fry's, Office Depot and Staples will have loss leader sales from 7 AM to 10 AM.

    5 years ago I fitted a 56k internal modem to my 1992 vintage 386 machine (20 mhz). It did email and could visit the less demanding sites. Unfortunately the long life battery helping the clock chip expired so the machine isn't working at the moment. But, all the Outlook express messages will still be there on the hardrive (80 MB). Originally the machine used Windows 3.0 when new, but to get on the net I upgraded to 3.11. Must get that 386 fixed one day. Had an SVGA monitor which was cool at the time. ;)

    I don't even think I've ever seen a 386. I mean, I've seen the 486, and used it, but never the 386. What a dinosaur. :D

    I used to have an Amiga with a 11k modem. It did graphical browsing, wow! only in 8-bit colour, mind...

    I had a 386 that my dad gave me...hell, I still use it, it has been upgraded 18 times!

    The irony is that the oldest computers might be the safest too. They are not subject to the same vulnerabilities peculiar to the latest windows and ie because they can't run them.

    You are right, thinking back to those days I rarely had a problem with my 386 or Win 3.0, 3.1, 3.11. It was already 7 years old when I put the modem in it. I also had no problems with the Star dot matrix printer. In fact I'm still using the Star parrallel port cable for my current printer. :)
    The other day I heard someone say they once did their homework assignments on an Atari 1200 with 300 baud modem. I still have my first PC, an Atari 400 (with 48k pack and membrane keyboard).
