    Hi everyone

I need some help. I have XP PRO (sevice pack 2 updated) and have been having overclocking problems so i stupidly messed with the speed of the cd rom now i cannot get my system to reboot. All i get is a black and white screen that asks if i want to start in safe mode, in safe mode with networking another safe mode option, last know good cofig and normally no matter what i press it still wont reboot. If I attempt to start in safe mode all it does is load a number of system 32 drivers files but then stops turns it self on again and asks again. Doesnt matter what safe option i choose it does the same. I have a back up disk but the cd rom wont work (cause of my messing) what do i need to do? Do i need to get boot discs?? Change the BIOS?? argggggggg.. Any help would be good..

    Ta

see if you can borrow a cdrom off a friend or buy one, they're ever so cheap, and try that. you may have just fried your cdrom!

    Hi,

I don't understand, what do you mean you messed the the cdrom speed and how did you do it? If you have been overclocking and went to far you may have to clear the cmos.

Go into the BIOS and reset the defaults. The error 7 is a BIOS error message...could be related to bad hardware if the defaults do not work.

Take your XP installation CD, then chose Recovery console and do a chkdsk /R from the cmd prompt.

Does the bios recognize the cdrom? Try changing the cable. Try disconnecting the cdr to see if it will boot.

grrrrrrrr nope none of that works well when i say none i mean i have tried disconnecting cdr and that doesnt make a difference. If i could run the cdr i would run the recovery console from the disc but i cant. How do u reset a bios i have an Anus P4VP-MX motherboard looked at the circuit diagram but there doesnt seem to be a battery i can remove to reset. Only a 3mb bit flash bios. There is an auto recovery tool if i could only get my cdr going all would be good...still needing help here lol sorry guys i have tried everything suggested so far

    cheers

I corrected a similar problem the other day on XP-PRO Dell PC, booting to mup.sys, then rebooting etc.

It was corrected using install CD and run a chkdsk /r from Recovery Console.
    >A power fick while PC was booting up, probably caused this.
    :p
    Have you tried chkdsk ?

    Agree with Dolby.

The symptoms you described, looks like your file structure is damaged, causing XP not to load correctly, by overclocking.

    A]BIOS
You 1st have to get the BIOS straight by loading failsafe defaults, but by loading failsafe defaults, you still have to know the BIOS settings that you can change, some stuff shoud be left disabled, while after loading failsafe defaults, you may have to enable some stuff[Like USB mouse]......So everybody should write their working BIOS settings down as soon as possible, for later reference.......This will save you lot of grief.
    >Correcting your BIOS, will solve your overclocking problem, causing this in 1st place, but some damage to your file structure has been done, and the BIOS corrections, cannot solve that.

    B]Overclocking
Well you may still have run chkdsk from Recovery Console[Using install CD],
because in this case, your overcloking practise damaged your file structure needed to fully boot.

C]If chdsk does not work, you'll have to do a Repair + re-install SP2 afterwards.

Can you get to Recovery console ?

Can you run chkdsk /r [repair] from there ?

The mup.sys...reboot is exactly the problem I fixed with chkdsk on my work PC......

i don't know if you've tried yet, but have you given the bootup floppies a try? its painful but can sometimes work.

After getting your PC to boot from it's own disk with chkdsk /r, be prepaired to re-install your grafics drivers, myne was missing, but the PC booted.

The file loading in safe mode just after mup.sys, is agp.....[You don't see this one loading].

Yes i have tried to run the boot discs which is where I have got the Error 7 code on the 2nd disc. As per previous thread. I cant run recovery console beause 1. the cdr will not work and 2. the boot disc error on the 2nd disk. I have reset the CMOS as per my last reply but this has made no difference im wondering if i put in another stick of ram will the overclocking stop or if i shift the ram to another slot? Im running out of ideas...TY all very much for your help

OK I am a little confused here on what you have tried so you may or may not have tried these.

Go into bios and set your boot priority to cdrom first boot device, save and exit, then put in your xp cd reboot and get to recovery console. Your cdrom should work if not then try a windows98 boot floppy and select boot with cdrom support. This will load drivers for the cd, put in your xp cd and type d:/setup, I think you can get to recovery console this way.
If neither of these work and you have tried a different cdrom then either the cable is bad or the controller. Try replacing the cable first if it still don't work then put the cdrom on the same cable as your hardrive but set the jumber on back of the cd drive to slave. Leave the boot priority in bios set to cdrom as first boot device and boot with the xp cd in.
