    Ok here is my frustration...

Fro two years I have been trying to copy a video from a small 30min 14 GB Fujifilm DVD-R disk that I recorded on my Panasonic camcorder. This was my sister-in-laws wedding, so it is kind of important.

The camcorder will not read the disk, so I can't transfer the files via USB.

I have tried the old "copy/paste" trick, and that won't work.

I have tried using VLC Media Player, and it will play the files. Windows Media Player will also "play" the files. There is a glitch in the same spot in the video where the programs will freeze up.

I assumed that this was a scratch, so I used 4 different programs. Copycat, Bad CD/DVD Reader, CD Recovery, and DvDisaster. None of these programs will help me to copy or convert these files.

I realize that I will lose some data (where the scratch is), however there is perfectly good video on the rest of the disk that I can't seem to get off of there. My DvD drive won't read the full disk, so I am missing out. But yet if I am in Windows Media Player, and "fast-forward" past the glitchy spot, the rest of the disk will play.

So why can I play it on my PC, yet no friggin program out there will copy the files over to me (minus the broken fragments obviously)?????

Can anyone please give me suggestions? Please don't ask me to try toothpaste, or CD scratch removers, cause I did that on one disk and completely lost it. There has to be a freeware program out there that can do this.

Thanks soooooo much to anyone who can help me.

Hi bean, does VLC give any errors when you play or when it freezes?

Are you not able to skip past the damaged bit in VLC?

What type of file is it (what codec does it use for encoding)? GSpot should give you the answer under Video.

Also if it is an avi file see if VirtualDub will open it.

Is the file actually 14GB? On one DVD?

Bean, if you can play it in VLC just press record when you play it.
[you might have to enable the "advanced controls" to see the record button]...

    View >> Advanced controls

It will save the file to you my documents folder, it will be called something like..

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

As far as the 'scratch' corruption, give Unstoppable Copier a try - I've seen it succeed when other programs fail...

I've recovered data with ISO buster before, but if there is physical damage....probably need to find a way to repair the disk.

--If you feel adventurous, there are several repair tools for scratched dvd/cd on the market. They basically sand down the scratch so that the media can be read.

I don't have anything that the others haven't already said. +1 on ISO Buster. I had a DVD-RW that was used one to many times and it had corruption on it, no scratches just actually bad data. I am not sure if ISO Buster is fully working while a trial or not, I know it is a pay program, try the free options first then maybe the paid. But there is still no guarantee of success.

Yeah, ISO Buster should be able to give you a general idea of whether it can do it prior to buying. It will not actually do the deed unless its unlocked though.
