I hope this is the right forum to ask if you feel on line back up like Mozy is sufficient for very sensitive data, the type you would really not want anyone else to see.

Personally, I do not put anything online that is sensitive.
Backup at home to an external hard drive that you control, not someone's server somewhere in cyberspace.

    I tend to agree.
Many people do online banking but SOME of those sites are very secure and are a different issue.
The ext hard drive is the best idea.
Can you back up your entire hardrive with just usb so in case of disaster, you can restore from the backup software?

    Hi Peter

You answering your own question! ;)

Personally never backup sensitive data to online backups, I do use the secure side of Skydrive for some backup files, but most go on secondary or ext HDD using Acronis.

    >> I do not wish to criticize another's point of view but I just received a reply in the doityourself forum and his opinion was that online back up was essential as there may be a house fire etc.
He also has something hidden in the cellar.
Personally, I am going to get an external hard drive with Smart software so I can back up, restore and retrieve lost files, easily.
A company called Rebit has some drives that read well and then there is W.D. with their Smartware.
I am not going to image as I am not skilled but do need backup and finally this seems to be ok for me.
Sorry about past redundancies but issues do get confusing as you learn more about them.

    Hi Peter

No online backups are fine and as I mentioned I use Skydrive, but I dont save personal identifiable data or anything bank or finance wise to any online service no matter how good they are and tbh Microsofts service is likely to be one of the safer options.

Also online backup services can cost alot to keep per year subscriptions in some cases, also they rely on you having a damn good upload internet speed, otherwise uploading GBs of data could take weeks!!

External drive is a great idea (WD drive are good I have two passport external HDDs) and one I use too, but dont underestimate yourself as you are skilled enough to use imaging software as it is really easy to use, trust me it is and Acronis or EASEUS ToDo are two imaging apps that are very easy to master, EASEUS is free and has great guides on how to use and I will if needed draft up a guide for you if you decide to use it, but both Acronis and ToDo are very simple to use as I generally dont suggest things if I feel they will be complicated for the poster as in you in this instance.

To cover the fire in house thing and god forbid that happens to you is to get a fireproof box to pop your external hdd in for safe keeping.

Also you can mirror folders, say your Documents folder or locations you save personal stuff to with an external drive and Synctoy which is free and syncs folders between loactions together so that they are basically backed up. Instruction on Synctoy HERE
