On Power Tab, A New Thing

The power management tab on my Local Area Connection now has something new. It has a checkbox and says, "only allow a magic packet to wake this computer." And the big hint that this is done TO me is the fact that I can't uncheck the box. This "thing" has never appeared before on any hardware that had a tab that let me control power. Just two. One allows the device to be turned off to save power, and the other allows this device to wake the computer. I never check either box. Now there's a third box under the "wake the computer" option, and I can't change it.

What in the hell is a "magic packet"? It can't be good news. Could the "magic packet" be a registry entry?

No device needs to wake up my PC. I shut it down by turning off the power. Furthermore, I unplug the telephone-type plug on my modem when I turn off the pc. I doubt if this new sneak trick can cause me any harm. But I want to get rid of it.

I'm checking other devices to see what their power tabs are saying. Betcha they all do, if they have a power tab at all.

Can you help me? Reinstalling the driver changed nothing. But can you find out what the hell a "magic packet" is and what people use it for?? It sounds infantile.
    Thanks,
    Holly B.

So you see, all checked or only magic packets checked works.

You don't need to pull the ethernet cord to keep a computer safe. The computer I'm currently on has been connected since 2009 and I've managed to keep it clean.

What I want is no boxes checked on power management. Your image is what mine looked like and still does, but yesterday, I couldn't change anything. Today, I've removed all checks. Hope it takes. Because I never had that magic packet thing before. I would surely have seen it and questioned it then and there. That tab has always had only two boxes.
As long as no boxes are checked, and it stays that way, I'm a happy camper.
Thank you very much. I'll only be back if it changes again.
    Merry Christmas.
