Judging by the backreading in this forum, I'd say that problems with Realtek AC'97 Audio are running rampant, so allow me to add myself to the queue.

I'm attempting to coerce my audio into working on the following system:
    • Asus K8N Ai Series Motherboard (nVidia nForce chipset) w/ Realtek AC'97 Sound.
    • AMD Sempron 3100+
    • 512 MB RAM
    • GeForce 4 Ti4200 (128 MB)
    • Seagate Barracuda 120GB HD
    • WinXP Pro SP2

    I have tried the following:
    • Installing drivers off of the accompanying CD.
    • Installing drivers downloaded from a support site.
    • Installing drivers downloaded from another site.
    • Installing some newer drivers I found.
    • Checking for conflicts or other problems in XP.
    • Enabling what audio options I could in BIOS.
    • Double-checking that my speakers are plugged in correctly.
    • Yelling angrily.

The speakers I know to be fully functional and all other components of the motherboard (USB, Ethernet, etc) are working perfectly.

And yet, for some reason, no sound. Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if you have your sound muted? I have seen this happen before. Almost forgot, welcome to MajorGeeks! :)
