I have a Hp pavilion a1610n and i had some malware problems and after a root kit completely wrecked my hard drive i replaced it to find my onboard video is completely fried to the point where when i try to get into my BIOS i get "Check signal cable" I tried running my seperate video card but due to a lack of drivers i got the same result. I could really use some help ive been stuck like this for two months. Thanks for your time

Nope, i get some light in it and it gets power and check signal cable msg, thats all. Are there any video cards that dont require drivers or is there anyway to install the drivers to that harddrive using another computer? mabe hooking it up as external storage and manually placing the files?

Did you get any beep codes, or the standard beep you get when you boot? If not, I'm guessing the mobo might be gone.

Reason 1: The "check signal cable" tends to be a monitor message, not BIOS.

Reason 2: If the onboard video's gotten fried, it's likely other components of the mobo have too.

Any video card will work. You don't need drivers for a video card until after the Windows desktop has loaded. In other words, if you installed a video card and powered on the PC, you would see the PC logo screen, you'd see the Windows loading screen with the scrolling progress bar, and you'd see the Windows desktop, but only at lower resolutions until the driver is loaded. So, if you still got nothing when plugging your monitor in to a PCI/AGP/PCIex video card, then it's safe to say the motherboard is probably dead (assuming the video card was installed correctly and power connectors to the video card were plugged in if needed). However, a bad CPU, bad memory, or bad power supply can also be the cause of your problems. But chances are, if the fans spin up and you can open/close the CD drives when you power up, then the motherboard is the most likely culprit. As stated above, the 'check cable' message is from the monitor, not the video card or motherboard or PC. Also, the question of whether you get any beeps when powering up is a good one....

for some reason ive never gotten a beep out of this desktop but i have a feeling your right about the fried motherboard. i had no idea the virus could have done that much damage

I've never heard of a virus (other than BIOS virus, which is extremely rare and only happens when flashing the BIOS) causing the mobo to die, the worst I've heard is that it can ruin a CRT by changing the refresh rate, or lodge itself into the boot sector. However, it is possible there was a minor power surge when you turned it on -- It happened to my old PC.

Yeah the virus was relly really deep in it removed the boot sector for safe mode and ruined alot of the bios before all this occured

Did you try pulling out the CMOS battery?

Just had a brainstorm: Maybe the virus turned off the fans and caused overheating. When you boot up, try putting a hand on the case, how long can you hold it there?

Sorry for the double post, it wouldn't let me edit. I was doing some research, and it's possible it wasn't a malware, it may have been I/O error that had the symptoms of a malware. Then it dying right after the format just a coincidence.

The heatsink and fans are running but i noticed normally after booting up they slow after revving up at the start. now there spinning like crazy allmost as if im running at 100% CPU usage
