So while I was out hunting a strange thing happened in my head (lol..no comments from the back row please). I merged 2 well-known songs together and it worked really well!

So now I want to find some free software where I can cut and paste parts of tracks together. Any ideas anyone where I might find such a thing?

    Indeed.
I must know, is audacity comparable to Adobe Audition?

You should also put all the sheet music down with finale notepad, a handy little program, so that we all can play it :D .

I guess it all depends on your definition of free eh? I do a lot of mixing like that and use Acid DJ pro 4.0 for it (no comment), and have a blast. Of course, a lot of my mixing is putting audio clips into songs at strategic places to make them funny as hell. Recently mixed a Queens of Comedy clip about Jenny Craig into I'm every WOman by Whitney. The results were freaking hysterical.

//EDIT:If you like Acid DJ Pro, it is available here http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/acidfamily.asp //

Audacity is good and free - the open source part is nice as I've used bits of it for my own projects such as the tone generator and the FFT (their implementation of FFT is a bit dodgey to be honest...). However it's not great for workflow. Even when you know the interface common tasks take longer than they should.

For proper work I prefer Cool Edit (now Audition). I'm still running Cool Edit Pro 2.1, because it does everything I need it to and I see no reason to pay for the upgrade.

For DJing and mixing and stuff I really like Mixxx http://mixxx.sourceforge.net/ - It's just like having a couple of decks with a mixer and crossfader. It's even got a flanger. It's a shame it's not very stable on Windows, but that's not much a problem for me since my Lappy uses Linux. It's great for doing "live" stuff.

I plan to Novice, though it may take me a little while as I've never done anything like this before :)
