A few weeks ago, our computer modem died, but our ISP came out and gave us a new one. The internet works fine now [obviously, or else I would not be typing here]. However, the new modem has apparently registered a new connection, therefore many applications do not seem to recognize the connection. I frequently find myself clicking "cancel" when a window pops up trying to connect me to the internet. I'm already connected, yet these applications keep trying to do it with the old connection. I would register this new connection as my default, but it's not even in the connection list of the control panel; only the old connection is there.

I fear that if I delete the old registered connection, the "internet connection wizard" window will start popping up all the time, frustrating me even more. I just want to know if there's a way I can get the computer to recognize this new connection. Should I just call the ISP and try to work things out with them? Thanks for your time :)

You can delete the old connection.control panel>network connection>rightclick>del

I know I could, but that wouldn't cause these applications to recognize the new connection. It would simply encourage them to open up the Internet Connection Wizard. Either way I'm still "not connected" when I really am.

Actually, the applications will not "update" to your new connection all without saying!! You can change the connection settings for each application manually!! (nearly all of them e.g.´Outlook etc etc)

What makes me wonder is, that you can't see your current connection in the connections panel!! -> What kind of modem do you use?

He's absolutely right!! But I'm not sure if the Error messages will go away! Think they will turn into -> No connection available or something similar!

It's called a Westell.. thats about all I know. The ISP gave us no more information about it and I only know the name because it's written on the thing.

.. how is it connected to the computer? USB? Ethernet? Serial? Parallel? How does the cable look like!

It's ethernet. And the modem works well. It's that many applications don't recognize this connection. Do you see the problem?

:) I see the problem and am trying to figure out why you can't see the connection in your conenctions tab!

Note that the ethernet connection represents your internet connection!!! (simplified)

What is wrong with the internet conection wizard it will only come if you have no connections.I would delete the old connection and also uninstall old modem drivers if it still exist. If the old connection is uninstalled your apps will no longer use it.simple.Then the apps can be configured manually or automatically.

That is weird then how do you connect?Maybe you are using similar modems so there was no new drivers installed?
what happens if you dont press cancel, does it connect?Maybe you should take internet option>connection>never dial a connection.

The thing is I don't have to manually connect, as soon as the modem is plugged in, it is connected.

If I don't press cancel, it attempts to connect, but because the modem with which that connection is familiar no longer exists, the connection attempt fails. If I were to opt never to dial a connection, the applications would then simply say something like "No internet connection detected." They still wouldn't recognize the new modem.

That's a good point. In the control panel list of network connections, the Local Area Connection [with ethernet] is recognized to be functioning. Now then that you have mentioned this, is there a way I could get this ethernet connection as a primary connection or something? Would deleting my old broadband connection allow the ethernet connection to take full control?

Sounds like you are using broadband of some sort. Start->(Settings If needed)->Control Panel, double-click 'Internet Options', 'Connections' tab, click 'never dial a connection' if you can, click the 'Setup' button, click bottom radio button (manual/lan), next, bottom radio again (lan), next, uncheck automatic discovery, next, no, next, uncheck connect immediately, finish, and finally 'ok' on the internet properties window.

This will set 'Windows' default connection type to your new broadband connection. Any software written in the past few years will recognize it and use it automatically.

    Hope this helps,

I clicked the Setup button, but see nothing like what you have described here. I did however, check to "never dial a connection" but still cannot effectively use the applications with which I am having problems.

Hmm what OS are you using? Windows 98, ME, 2k, XP Pro, XP Home? Also what program specifically are you having probs with?

edit: When you click Setup, does a MSN window open up?

I'm using XP home. It's mainly that windows media is acting up. Normally I would just use Winamp, but for some of the internet things I would like to download, only windows media will do.

A window simply entitled "New Connection Wizard" pops up when I click the Setup button.

Ok does it say new connection wizard or 'Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard'?

    -K

edit:Ok, nm, look for a selection to 'setup internet connection manually' or something to that effect.
edit2: actually, it might say something like 'Dial-up to the internet'

Hmm, I'm also going to find a XPHome station that I can take a look at.

Alright -- e.g.: Windows Media Player uses the Internetsettings, provided in control panel>internet..options/settings(notsureatthemoment) - conenctions tab -> if there is a connection selected under DfÜ VPN settings - delete it

if you want to, you can now ad a broadband ethernet connection like King suggested!! - click Add-> choose use broadband via ethernet - or something similar (last option) - done...

Well I deleted the old connection, but I'm not exactly sure as to how to set up a new Broadband connection with the ethernet. I tried downloading some of the things again and Windows Media still won't respond to the fact that I'm connected to the internet. I tried selecting the bottom option the new connection wizard, but the connection that is subsequently created cannot be connected. I'm already connected to the internet, so there is no point in creating this new connection anyway. I don't know :(:(:(

Dang, no luck on the finding a Home station for me either, we just don't use it in corporate situations.

Honestly, there is no 'connection setup' needed for broadband usually, unless your isp uses ppoe or is through AOL or something. All you need to do is tell windows that you connect through a LAN. I'm gonna keep looking around.

Ha! Our office manager had her personal laptop with her that runs XPHome! So: Start->(Settings If needed)->Control Panel, double-click 'Internet Options', 'Connections' tab, click the 'Setup' button, next, connect to internet, next, setup connection manually, next, connect using BB connection that is always on, next, finish.

    GL & let us know,

King, I did what you said and I see some improvement. Windows Media seems to be responding better, except I still can't do some of the things I want to do. I know it's a problem with my computer, because these particular downloads work on other computers on which I've tested them.

The two main things are: this and this

Whenever I attempt to play these things, Windows Media says that the server is not responding. But thank you for the help so far :)

Ok, lets take a look at what version of WMP you're using. Open WMP, help, about.

Maybe also try a different streaming media player, realplayer, quicktime, etc. to see if its a problem with the player.

I got a server not responding on the 2nd link as well. 1st one worked though.

    Have you done ad-aware/spybot scans?

  31. Pobbn

    Pobbn Private E-2

I do use Winamp for just about everything else, but those two links require wmp. And there are plenty of things around that do. I'm using wmp version 9. I'll go run an ad-aware check right now.

  32. King

    King Private E-2

Ok maybe try WMP10, and get 'spybot search & destroy' to run after ad-aware.

Okee dokey well thanks for all your help so far. I'm probably getting a new computer soon anyway, so whatever wasn't working here, will most likely be better there. I really appreciate it, king :)
