Windows Live is "offering" (for better word) 5GB of storage, expected to jump to 25GB sometime in December.

I prefer not to put myself and my data in the hands of Microsoft any more than I have to. Their software is notorious for holes that must be patched and re-patched.

What are other reliable and free online file storage options? I really don't think I need 5 GB, much less the 25GB.

Frankly, security is going to be just as big of an issue with any of the online storage places. I suppose the word "windows" would make live a bigger target.

    I personally use http://www.box.net

i think if your files youre trying to store are the least bit important, storing them in places that you are not in control of should be more of a concern to you than "i dont like microsoft". if i cant seem to be able to trust microsoft, one of, if not the largest software developer companies in the world, then i wouldnt think id be able to trust some random data storage thing i find on the internet. just my opinion.

external hard drives come in handy.

I personally don't use online storage at all, for security issues among other things. Maybe an external usb hard drive could be more useful to you, but since you said you don't need 5 GB why not invest in a flash drive? You can get a 5 GB flash drive for a very reasonable price, and it fits in your pocket, key-chain, etc so you can have it with you at all times and not have to worry about losing it or it being in someone else's hands... Just a thought :)

One option i do is an FTP server. You can setup up a make shift one on your home computer. I have my own server so i have it running multiple types of services. But FTP is easy to setup.
Use your windows installation CD and install the Internet SErvices. It will appear in the Admin Tools under Control Panel. You can setup your FTP server from there. Also if you have a Firewall and a Router make sure you allow FTP's ports to pass. Then wherever you enter your IP address in a browser and instead of HTTP put FTP

That was assuming you wanted online storage because you wanted to access it anywhere, if you just wanted more space go for the External or Flash drives (which are becoming dirt cheap)

    Hi

A few online ones I have tried as I blogged about them a while back, when I was looking for free alternatives, but dont discount Skydrive because its from Microsoft, all software developers have bugs and holes with their apps, and the alternatives maybe much worse than getting into bed with the devil!
