I've always thought online casinos are one of the more taboo uses for the internet, you can lose your whole life savings in the comfort of your own home against a computer program, lines of code in the form of virtual slot machine that basically just take the money straight from your bank account and put it in theirs! Complex lines of code that are almost impossible to police efficiently.

And now they've took it a step further the slot machine app,you can lose all your life savings while your on the move! A while back a guy I knew was playing on his phone I thought he was on Facebook,he wasn't he playing on a slot machine app with real money and for the few minutes we were talking in the supermarket he lost £10.:confused

Am I the only one that thinks this is insanity? I push and push for freedom of the internet then something like this comes along and has me questioning my beliefs all over again, would some kind of ban on online slots games be so bad:confused Or does it encroach on freedom, personal choice and responsibility?

I'm thinking this is one of those things that's so devious and destructive people do need to be protected from themselves,IMO it blurs the lines between malware that steals your bank details/money and legal gambling.

    What do you think?

Viruses, malware and ads for bulls**t products that are too good to be true (to name just a few) are proof it is impossible to protect idiots from themselves. For every one that gets shut down, 100 more pop up.

In The States, there has been an attempt to stop online gaming. Even though credit card issuers and PayPal refuse to process transactions involving online gaming, it's still easy to play if you use alternative payment methods (wire transfer, a bogus "product" purchase that translates into gaming credits, etc.). Now it is at the point that some in the US Government think online gaming should be legalized nationwide simply because it would be easier to track and tax winnings.

As for your friend who lost money while shopping, it would have been just as easy for him to blow the same amount or more buying scratch-off lottery tickets. Most supermarkets in Texas have lottery vending machines; a single scratch off ticket can run as high as $50. rolleyes

While I get your concern and it's a shame it can't be regulated as it is at casinos (at least in the US), it's unrealistic, I think. Just as with everything (even child pornography), the government doesn't have a chance in hell of governing the internet. Maybe if all the governments in the world got together and agreed to regulate....

Chances of that happening...um, not in our or our great grandchildren's lifetimes. :-D

Like I've posted several times before in the past, you can't legislate against stupidity and ignorance. Someone is an alcoholic. Is that the liquor's fault, or the stoopid drunk that thinks a bottle solves their problems. Some people "party on" with prescription pills. Is it the Doctors and Pharmaceutical Co.'s fault, or the stupid junkies that think putting toxins in their blood is fun and cool. Someone speeds and kills a family of four. Do we sue General Motors and put in extra traffic lights, or do we blame the dick that was speeding whilst drunk and stoned.
Someone has a gambling problem, then the issue is with the gambler, (usually a combination of greed and something for nothing mentality and the so-called "thrill" of winning/wasting your money). On-line gambling, as more or less said above, is just another form of sleazy rip-off to be aware of on the 'Net. The scary thing is, like Rikky said, you can go from affluent to broke, or even in debt real fast. May as well give some Nigerian or Cambodian your bank and C/C details - it's the same result.rolleyes

I have no problem with it. I have bought a few things online after a few drinks that I would have waited to buy later, or did not need them. :-D I can't believe the guy burned through that much cash in just a few minutes! But I am sure he would find some other way to blow it.

Remember the horror stories about the 900 number phone charges some people ran up? Plus, I see no way to regulate stuff like that. The guy may be in the UK, but the website might be in Canada or China. And then there is the whole problem of who's morality are we going to follow?

I would not like the gubment telling me what I need and don't need.

I find myself agreeing with everyone,a ban like piracy would be impossible to enforce,I wouldn't even want a ban its up to whoever to blow their money as they please, freedom.

The thing that has me scratching my head is the legitamacy of it,unlike malware they advertise on regular TV and this was another thing that sparked my interest,an ad for Eight eight eight dot com casino was on and they boasted of 500+ different games,500 programs designed to keep you playing and take your money, who knows what tricks there are under the hood of each program the opportunity for malevolence is almost limitless.

I don't want to sound judgemental toward people who gamble online against these programs but WTH? Are you freakin moron your going to lose:-D

Me either but the odds are clearly stacked against the punters in this situation, would you be for some kind of government awareness program that warned people of the dangers of online casinos but didn't legislate at all or is that in the same vein? Not a loaded question,I don't know myself just getting opinions.

OK, I won't go very far with this. But, the idea of the US government (republican or democratic) giving advice on how to not waste money... :-D:-D:-D

On the other hand, maybe that is what the Congress has been doing the last 12 years or so... Online gambling. :cool

Back on topic more or less, the deck is stacked against anyone who gambles in casinos. Otherwise there would be no casinos. Like anything in life, some people will do to much of something. There is no way I see to legislate that away. Some people spend too much on cars, some on computers, some gamble, some live in shacks and have all kinds of $ invested or in the bank.

There is risk in freedom, but also rewards. If you try to remove all the risk, you would remove the rewards.

I've decided, nothing can be done,it can't be legislated against and it can't be stopped without taking away too much freedom.

Good luck to everyone who plays them,seriously:-D

I'm not connected to the collective,I have PAYG phone I got as a present that still has more credit on than the phone cost in 2002,about £30 I think:-D

You can't hack a phone that doesn't have wifi, keeps me safe from the pap'z:cool

I don't even have a cell phone. Well, I have one somewhere, but it does not have service.

I think part of this is related to the 'I must be available 24-7' nature of some people.

Well I thought cool I have a phone now and phone people but my very first experiences with owning a phone was that once people know you have a phone they want to call and to call you must carry the phone around with you and if you don't people give you an earful.

So my first experiences with owning my own phone were all negative, the phone had already increased my stress level and was tryna force it's way into my life and I hadn't even asked for it.

    This wasn't gonna fly:-D

Majority reason I have one is for wife & kid, to me this is essential, but for just talking, not much at all. I have never run over my minute talk time ever that I can remember, txting is free so mainly that's how the wife & I communicate.

Those that "lose the farm" gambling anywhere are living a dangerous life, just like drugs you can be your own worst enemy.

    MMOs

Are turning into Gambling BS i don't waste my money on that kinda stuff some people spend there whole pay check on it.There are ways too get items in games other then spending your whole pay check and the sad part about it is you can not get a refund.

Unless you go to Court but even then its still hard too get your money off.

MMO's are not turning into gambling bs, there's nothing gambling about mmo's, you pay for the services monthly, you get service monthly, thats not gambling. You buy an item from the blizzard store for example an in game mount, bam its delivered nearly instantly. Again, not gambling. Please point out how any mmo is gambling, you have me intrigued now.

Well it is kind a Gamble take for instance Star Trek online.

Right now for the last year and a half they have had Lock Box's Where you had to bye a Key from there C-Store They Have special items in the box's like .

    http://www.stowiki.org/Cardassian_Lock_Box
    And
    http://www.stowiki.org/Ferengi_Lock_Box

The Ferengi Lock Box is the one there on now it a high risk Gamble to open one.

Lock boxes have a chance to give you extraordinary rewards, such as unique gear, C-Store items, or rare starships!

You need a Key from there C-Store To unlock them But you can all so bye them from the Exchange for like a 1mill a key

This is a very high gamble some people have spent there whole pay check on these Key's

    Ferengi Lock Box
May contain any of the following items:

Opening a Ferengi Lock Box will always yield at least 1 Lobi Crystal in addition to any other contents unlocked. The [Ferengi Lock Box - Gold] may yield more Lobi Crystals than regular Lock Boxes.
    Note

The Gold Lock Box is basically None item now be cause they made it into a Green lock box witch is a such a Common item it pop's up just about every thing you kill.

My point here with this is

Most popular MMO's do have a Gambling system and most people don't realize it.Your Spending real money for fake stuff that is not real.

So in other words it is gambling and other MMO's do it too you just don't realize it be cause it helps them bring in extra money for them.

About 90% of the time when you open one of these box's half the time its junk items that most people don't want or need.

So like i said MMO's do gamble a little bit.

I have not heard of that Star Trek game Goldenskull. I can see how that would be a type of gambling. Online stuff that I have bought, was not gambling. If I want an item, I buy it for a certain amount of money, and get a digital item. No less real as it can be used in a game. And I put very little actual cash into a game. Unless you consider time = money. :-D

A bit OT, but that Star Trek game looks like you would need a spreadsheet to keep up with what you have. Too much work for me. Well, I am off to kill some demons. :cool

Well for most items its not a real gamble lol from the C-store you can still bye most ships and other items from the C-store on STO

But the Lock Box that STO has is basically a big gamble if you do use real money but you don't have to if you don't want too.

They got some thing called Dilithium that you can mine to get a key.it takes a little longer but its better then spending real money.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks Zasranets. :cool

This is a little OT, but I checked out the online auction for Diablo III. I like that! 'Bought' some really good armor and weapons, and have 'sold' some of my stuff. I only use the game money, am not going to use cash, but I bet they make some cash off that auction.

Spending real money, for online items, is not gambling!, gambling tends to imply money, and you can loose all your money. If you buy items in that game, you will end up with some sort of item, just randomly decided. If you can't control your spending, i think thats something you need to handle, not be legally mandated. Some people can't handle games or there money, why should we penalize those who can. Also as far as online gambling, why not? People will loose there money in various other ways, so do what you enjoy. Personly fred, i dont think thats off topic, i think thats a great way for blizzard to work towards controling black market gold selling and such, and will be interesting to see how it plays out.
