    Hi troops

I have an 8mb broadband connection and want to use it for once.

I have never done online games before but would like to start. Hear many folk talking about it but never found any sites or anything to get me started.

What i'm looking for is an online shoot em up type game, as a solo player against other folk around the web. Names escape me but i know there is some classic ones going round.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

some other very good online shooters:

    BF2
    Day of Defeat
    Call of Duty 2
Counter strike: source (not my cup of tea but well loved by a lot of people)

Try out FEAR. The game's price just dropped and there is a great online community as well as Beginners Servers so you can play with others at your own level. I love the maps they have, and its free...in fact with the last patch came 5 new multi player maps and 2 new scenarios.

I would say FEAR, FarCry, Battlefield2, CounterStrike and of course Call of Duty. Or pretty much what everyone else said:) \\

I'm obsessed with Battlefield 2 right now. The ranking system has me sucked in. I can't get enough of it... the stats... trying to get more and more... just building up my "character", so to speak.

I used to enjoy Counter-Strike and CS:Source. Also, Day of Defeat. But the rank system of BF2 just got me hooked. I love having my stats carry over from when I complete a round. Then seeing what I need to do to get the medals and awards. It's great fun having to work towards a goal.

Plus, I get to keep track of how much time I've wasted. :D

Here is a site where you can track your stats without having to go into the game: http://www.bf2s.com/

It's neat because you can see what exactly you need to do to get specific medals. It's a little more detailed than the stats you see in BFHQ.

If you are looking for singleplayer, I'd recommend FEAR and Quake 4. Both of those are great singleplayer FPS's.

:) That makes 2 of us, Snake. I love the ranking system too, I think i am a gunnery sergeant. What's your rank? Haven't been playing much lately though hit my cap on the internet:eek: ( which is bs!) but what can I guy do? lol

To be honest I got BF2 right when it came out, I can;t stand it now...for some reason it's no fun for me, just alot of things about the game bug me...alot.

Like for instance the M95 Barrett is a 50. Cal it's used for light vehicles and basically would shred a human being in 1 shot, the fact that it takes two shots and like 100 to destroy a hummer is kinda stupid, so point being the realism isn't there.

Tank battles are pointless it takes what 3 shots and they're completely destroyed, you can't loose the trax and still be able to shoot or something of that nature you can't take any other type of damage to the tank, even Grenades hurt the tank which is stupid because they would hardly phase a tank.

It's really no fun for me. I guess that's why I'm addicted to AA more.

BF2 is great, however the Project reality mod is tops. It's what the game should have been from the start. Heaps of servers to.

I'm a Gunny right now. I'm getting close to First Sergeant though.

Here's my stat page if you are curious: http://www.bf2s.com/player/44030167/

DarkCypher0x0: Yeah, BF2 is more of an arcade style game than a simulation. Realism takes more of a backseat to balance. I guess it depends on what you enjoy more. If it were more realistic, the US hardware would dominate... especially armored vehicles... and how fun would that be?

I was annoyed with BF2 at first, but I gave it a second chance and I found I really enjoyed it. It is what it is. Don't think of it as "oh this is an Abrams and it should do this in real life..." because if you do that, you aren't going to enjoy yourself. Think of the game as just a bunch of models and other objects with skins that are balanced for the sake of gameplay. They just happen to be modeled after real-world weaponry.

I enjoy the way the game is set up: the massive levels, the strategy involved, the vehicles, and the ranking system most of all. Another thing I like about BF2 is that it's so easy to mod. In addition to multiplayer, I play against bots quite a bit... just to practice and for fun. I've made my own mod using existing game content. It's so easy to go into the game files, unpack what you want, and make your own "flavor" of the game. I added some Armored Fury content into vanilla BF2 maps. Next, I'm going to modify the A10 a little to make it more like the A10 was in Desert Combat (for BF1942).

I'm not saying you have to like this game. Everyone has different tastes. It's just that a lot of your complaints sound similar to the complaints I had about a month after the game came out. I stopped playing BF2 for close to 6 months, then I gave it another chance. Now, I'm playing it close to 3-5 days a week and maybe 2-4 hours in one sitting.

Just look at the history tab and click on the score graph on my stats page. There's a long period of inactivity, then BOOM! It shoots up after May 20th. :D

Not advisable for someone who hasn't played the game online by now to try QIII online ;)

Not too many people still play public servers and those who do would be far too intimidating for someone new to the game. Still I agree with you, great fun to play.
