any recommedations for (free) online storage? i am about to take the final plunge and upload anything and everything i own somewhere.

so far i've been having good luck with adrive, despite its annoying interface. but i'm having second thoughts about skydrive (M$), now that they've raised their free account limits from 5G to 25G. still less than adrive's 50G, but enough for my needs atm. at the time i started all this, the thought of stringing together multiple accounts to kludge the 18G or so i needed was too much to deal with.

since i'd like redundancy anyways (plan to pitch all my CDs, including backups and archives), i was thinking one copy on adrive and one copy on skydrive. or perhaps 2 copies each, just to be safe. (i don't mind the multiple IDs so much as long as each one contains a "full" copy.)

any thoughts? are these the best two to go with?

and what about "encryption"? i would prefer that random hackers (or adrive staffers) cannot read my various files verbatim, but i will admit that i use hotmail, etc., unencrypted all the time. in theory someone somewhere could read my attachments at any time, right?

rather than learn the ins and outs of encryption, i was thinking of zipping the entire upload under a password and uploading THAT instead. any thoughts?

    Hi

They are both fine for your needs, Skydrive does allow you to keep our files secure as you only share with yourself or any one you trust that is in your contacts (that had a Passport acccount ID), I use Skydrive and its very quick speeds for transfers.

If you wish to encrypt files from even staffers at those sites accessing your files, then you could zip or RAR batches of the saved folders up and add a password to the Zip/RAR files, then upload.

Some of the other ones I would have suggested have lowered their space for Free services, Humyo (10GB), MyOtherDrive (2GB) and 4Shared is still 10GB.

I've just found out that SkyDrive can't upload "folders", which I find really astonishiing, coming from the likes of Hotmail.

And zipping things doesn't serve much purpose, since there's a 50M/file cap on uploads. That is, if I want to upload the contents of 20 folders adding up to 20G, I have to go into EACH of those folders seperately and upload the contents.

That's BEYOND being a pain! I was trying to image (back up) my HDD here!!!!

    Back to ADrive go I....

    :-o

I believe the point of zipping was to add a password for unzipping the file. That clearly seems what Halo was saying. And, you did express concern about security, so that would be a solution.

Didn't know this existed, just made an account and transferred files!

No, I meant that zipping could not (also) serve as a workaround for this "no folders" protocol. In theory, one could take the whole mess of folders, subfolders, etc and upload it as one master "zip" file, but then the "filesize limit" would prove prohibitive.

I am quite happy with adrive. Screwy java interface took some getting used to, but it holds everything I own and I can upload and download in big foldered chunks. Basically everything on "C:" exactly as is sits there -- just drag the head node!

That said, I would like to upload everything to *2* unrelated sites -- redundancy for when the apocalyse comes. Since SkyDrive is a wash, anyone have a recommendation on which of many others to try?

    Guess I'll try SugarSync next...

I should clarify, I want to stick to FREE services.

That knocks out SugarSnap, Box.net and Mozy for starters (free accts a gig or 2 at best).

So I'm back to asking for suggestions.

    Here's a starter list: http://websearch.about.com/od/web20/a/online-storage.htm

I'm really only looking at the ones with 10G or more available.

    Any preferences among those?
