Only hour glass at Start button bar - nothing else

My presario will not do anything once the windows screen comes up. I have tried ctrl alt del & nothing - self running cd nothing - getting into cmos nothing....

I cannot get past the initial start button/bar - everytime I go do there I only see the hour glass - I have yet to see my mouse indicator. ------ what am I doing wrong ---

Please help........

 

Couple of questions:
New computer?
New install?
Or your pooter just went west, out of the blue?

ROFL...I actually was going to say that, but I think I know the answer for once.

Go to start, run, services.msc. Set SSDP Discovery Service to Disabled.

Test and report back.

Note: You migt have to do this from Safe Mode.

 

In case you are wondering, SSDP Discovery Service polls for Universal Plug and Play devices.

Aside from making a router less user friendly, it is probably useless to you.

Somtimes it breaks. The classic symptom for the break is an hourglass when trying to use the start button. I don't know why, but the only resolutions I know of are, disable it, System Restore back to when it worked, or clean install of Windows.

Agreed Adryn, I disabled the booger 'bout a year ago and hav never missed it at all.

did you hit F8 right before the windows XP splash screen comes up?

 

Let's get this straight. You boot your puter and hold down the F8 key or keep tapping it from the time the computer starts to boot (black screen) and your machine won't go to the option screen that allows you to choose safe mode?

YOU could always try BOOT INI . start / run TYPE msconfig click BOOT INI tab , tick box safeboot and restart your pc .

make sure you go back and untick it afterwards
