Only works properly in safe mode

    Hi

I've recently tried to go back to factory settings on my laptop, however, after reinstalling Windows it only works properly in safe mode.

In normal mode (even in diagnostic mode), there are devices that don't work (keyboard, touchpad, and possibly others) and there are startup programs that don't get going. Some programs work just fine, others work after hours of waiting and many will not work at all.

I tried to update my drivers, so I installed SP3 from the microsoft .exe file. This didn't seem to make any difference. I also updated the driver for the touchpad, but again, it didn't fix anything.

I have checked the disks and ran Malwarebytes, but they both came up clean.

I don't know what I should do. Please help me.

    My computer specs:
    Acer Aspire 5000
Windows xp home (started with SP2, but is updated with SP3)
    OEM windows
And the reason I reinstalled windows was because after a windows update and an AVG Free update, my computer stopped working and wouldn't work even in safe mode.

    Thanks,
    Rob

I would try reflashing your BIOS.

Goto your computer manufacturers website and look for the latest BIOS update. Install it and go from there.

I think the first thing you should do is to go into MSCONFIG and stop all start up programs and then see if normal mode is working. If that doesn't work, you may need to do a repair install ( if on XP ) or a system repair if in Vista/Win7.

    Hi and welcome to MG's,
When you say that you tried to restore your laptop to factory settings, did you mean that you done a fresh install of just windows xp or was this a destructive install.. i.e.. did you do a full format of your hard drive??(totally wiped cleaned of OS and software) or was it just a overlay of the OS. If it was a desctructive install, did you install your motherboard chipset/drivers,and all the other drivers for video/sound etc.. if not those can be found here....

Figured I would provide resolution here.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
    - the bios was the most up-to-date version
    - I didn't have any of the windows CDs anymore, and neither my repair install or a fresh install from c: i386 solved my problems.

So, I ended up reformatting the computer with Linux. I sorely miss my MS Office, but the computer works again.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.
