OpenDNS (???)

There's a new app here at MG on the front page called CleanMem (link http://www.majorgeeks.com/Cleanmem_d5972.html). When new stuff comes up here at MG that interests me, I usually follow the link to the authors/publishers web site. So I clicked it, went to their site, and started poking around. Apparently it's a new site and they have a Tips-n-Tweaks section. Upon looking through the list of tips, I found something about how some ISPs inject ads into your web surfing depending on what sites you're visiting (link http://www.pcwintech.com/howto/ip_tricks_fixes.html see 'Trick 2' near the bottom of the page), and a fix was offered by visiting another web site called https://www.opendns.com/ So I went and checked it out. I read some of the 'how-to' stuff and some of the 'what-is' stuff, but I still don't really know what this whole opendns thing is all about, or how it effects my surfing (either positively or negatively or not at all), or why would I or anyone else do it, and what happens and what exactly takes place if I do decide to "do it". I dislike ads as much as the next guy, but I just assumed they were part of the price you pay to surf. Will this "opendns" get rid of ads completely? If anyone can shed any light on any of this, and clear it up a bit, I'd really appreciate it. I found all this very interesting, and it has something to do with the dns cache in Windows (I think) and I'd just like to know exactly what all this is about....

yeah, my friend comes to me for computer advice, and their sister registered on opendns.com and now they can't use any of their emails, friendster, visit youtube. I was wondering how to get rid of it for them. Its not even a download, it just registering, so how does it block them from viewing other websites?
