opening jpg files

    I have some photos emailed me that have a jpg extension I cannot open.
    Chasing that down on Google netted me lots of ads for programs that will open these files.
    Is there a way to open jpg files without adding even more programs to my computer?
    Thanks,

    Try Universal Viewer. After it's installed, it will appear in your right-click menu. So right click on one of the files and select "Universal Viewer" from the list (it will be near the top). If that doesn't work, try opening it with Paint. If that doesn't work, try one of the 'picture' programs like IrfanView or one of the others in the Graphics section here at Major Geeks.....

    Irfan has a portable version. I use it because I don't always want to install still more programs.
    Code:

    Thanks to all for answering my query.
    I am starting with universal viewer, but will try all to see which suits my needs best.

    Universal Viewer seems to create additional work for me, or I am going at it wrong.
    When I pull up the file (in this case an email) and open with UV, it displays the text but I cannot find the picture (attachments) which is what I need to copy.
    Comments or suggestions welcome, obviously, before I go on.
    Thanks,
    Skysarge.

    I downloaded Universal and Fast Stone.
    I am still trying to figure how to get them to open the email attachments.
    This brings to front a question.
    Why am I not able to open "some" jpg files now?
    I have published newsletters for some four years, and until now have had no problems opening email jpg attachments. When I ask readers for submissions I always specify send stories as email and pictures as attachments. It has worked well for me in the past.
    Thanks, and thanks to all who sent suggestions for programs to use.

    Skysarge,

    What OS and email client programs are you using? Both Paint and Pictures and Fax viewer open .jpg's. :)

    OS = XP Pro
    Email = Thunderbird or OEx

    You might try saving the attachment to a folder, and then try to open them, if you're not already doing this.

    If that's not it, any way you can attach a couple of the problem .jpgs here, let us take a look at them? I'm leaning towards corrupted image downloads.

    I can copy the jpg files by putting them in another file, and then copying using one of the programs suggested here.
    However, that is more steps that add time and aggravation to the process, neither of which are welcome.
    But, I still would like to see if there is a problem behind the sudden inability to copy directly from the email file, and to correct the situation.
    Also, to all who added to this, thank you.

    You might take a look at OE's Tools, Options, Security, see if anything's checked there that's preventing opening files - could be the same with Thunderbird. Shot in the dark, but worth a look.

    (BTW: I flew in and out of Tinker a couple of times in the early '80s, MAC flights from Schofield Barracks to Ft. Bliss - was only there a couple of hours each time, so I couldn't explorer OK City, but I was impressed at how clean and neat the terminal was.) :major

    OK there, all as set up originally.
