I just inherited a newish Dell XPS laptop with Windows 10, but before my friend died....he went downhill from cancer really fast, and was semi-delerious on morphine towards the end.....he did not tell me the PIN and I assumed it was the same as the one for his tablet, which I knew. That was a password. This laptop is asking for a PIN, and though it has a password option, his tablet password doesn't work.

I can't reset it from Microsoft because I don't have access to either his phone or his email.

In previous years people used to create boot USBs for this kind of thing. Or boot into Safe Mode and go from there.....but booting and pressing F8 achieves nothing with this laptop.

Is there some way to circumvent the PIN, or do I have to reinstall Windows ?

The easiest is to re-install Windows 10 as it was your friend's laptop.
