Open Office is a free open source version of an Office type software http://www.openoffice.org/ If you have Microsoft Office then you dont really need this software too, but if you dont have Microsoft Office then its a great free alternative, its possible it came from an install of Sun Java Runtime as I noticed the latest installers have a box to untick if you dont wish to install Open Office.

As mentioned Open Office is a good alternative to Microsoft Office, so try it out, you may like it, or if as mentioned you have MS Office its best to stick with what you know.
