    Hi Everyone:

I have a quick question about Opera Email program and Avast A/V.

During setup of Avast when the email protection was being
setup, the list of email programs included Outlook and
Outlook Express but did not show Opera's Email Program on
    the list.

Is my incoming and outgoing email being protected, using
    Opera Email Program?

    Thanks,

    Maggie

    Hey Maggie,

I don't use any of those, but i thought there was an option in Avast! where you can specify that you don't use MS Outlook.. otherwise you can always look on their forum

also what version of Avast! are you using?

hope i could be of any help :)

    Hi Rataplan,

    Thanks for you message.

Avast version is 3.0.464.4. VPS file is 7.70-87.20 5/14/2004.

In the setup of Email protection that I saw was a window with a message
about Outlook and Outlook Express. It said something like
if you use ONLY Outlook or Outlook Express, you don't need to proceed
with the setup. For all other programs, proceed. Since I have been using
Opera for a while and not Outlook or Outlook Express, I proceeded but
in the Window where it shows Email Programs to be selected to be protected, there was no Opera.

What prompted my curiosity about this was that I had been reading in the Avast Forum right before posting my question here at MG. There was a person on the Avast Forum who was worried that his incoming and outgoing emails were not protected by Avast. He was using Outlook Express, however.

I just got rid of Norton Systemworks in favor of Avast. In Norton's, it always showed a little scanner that scanned my emails before they went out. I guess this new program, Avast will take a little getting used to.

Anyway, thanks for the note! Appreciate it.

    Hi Xflat:

Thanks so much for responding to my message.

I have done as you suggested and checked the little
Avast Icon in task bar. Internet Mail is being protected
    as you mentioned.

I did go into the configuration and looked at it.
The only question I have is in the Advanced Tab.

In Advanced Tab the message is:

    Timeout for Internet Communications: 120
When this time is over: "ask" is selected

Is this the correct setup in Advanced Tab?

Thanks so much for your help!

    Maggie

    Hi Maggie,
I'm on dial-up and here is how I have Opera's email set up to work with Avast. In your accounts properties..servers tab, your incoming POP server and outgoing SMTP server have to be changed to: 127.0.0.1. Your username also requires a change. Lets say your username is maggie and your ISP provider is cyberspace.net then in the Username box you would put "maggie#cyberspace.net"...no quotes. When Avast is scanning you should see a small blue icon appear on your task bar.
One final point Maggie, Opera's email client will not open attachments so you won't get a virus using it...it's only when you open any attachments that the virus is activated and as long as Avast is active it should catch it.
