Opera and Speedtest.net, Huh?

    Hi folks.

    I'm having a bit of a problem with Opera v12.12 and Speedtest.net. When I run a speedtest and then choose the "SHARE THIS RESULT" button I get this.

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/0.png
    This image is named "0.png"

    While the results at the top were showing,

    http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/5024/servercentralspeedtestn.jpg

    With Firefox and the "SHARE THIS RESULT" it gives,

    http://www.speedtest.net/result/2558304365.png
    This image is named "2558304365.png"

    So far, I've done the usual.
    • Cleared the cashe, cookies, etc. with ccleaner.
    • Made sure scripts were allowed.
    • Stopped ad blocking.
    • Allowed pop-ups.
    • Allowed frames, iframes and animated images.
    • Nothing on the page is being blocked by the content blocker.
    • Turbo is off.
    So, what am I over looking in Opera that causes Speedtest to give that blank "shared" result?

    This is on an old Dell XP home machine that runs extremely well. No indication of malware or any other problems. It's very stable and reasonably fast for it's age.

    Hi plastidust.

    I'm using Opera 11.64 with a 3.0 Mbps connection on Win XP and it worked fine for me.

    - block unwanted pop-ups On
    - accept cookies only from site I visit
    - enable javascript
    -- javascript options:
    allow changing status field
    allow scripts to detect context menu events

    The latest version is 12.14

    One of the listed changes in 12.13 -
    - Fixed an issue where images will not load after back navigation, when a site uses the HTML5 history API

    Hi mjnc.

    I was afraid rolling back to v11.64 might be the answer. My settings are pretty much the same, except for the "block unwanted pop-ups". For Speedtest.net, it's set to "allow all pop-ups". I'll be changing that back.

    When the v12.13 update came out, the update failed with the message that some file couldn't be found. After that the v12.12 installation was acting erratic. Took a while to repair that damage.:(

    Then the v12.14 update came out, supposedly fixing the update problem. But, for me, it caused the same problem again. Just a different file not found this time. Back to the repair damage routine.:mad

    This issue never showed it's face for me.
    No problems at all with Opera until those last two updates. And since the repair(s), the only hick-up has been the Speedtest ordeal, which is minor.

    Didn't I read that Opera was planning on switching from the Presto rendering engine to the WebKit engine? Also, from their change logs:
    Compared to the people in your "terrible loading time" link, and several other posts I've read on the Opera forums, I'm not really having any problems at all.

    Appreciate the info. Looks like the best fix for now is to go back to v11.64.

    I'm using Opera 12.14 on my Windows 7 system and have no problem with speedtest.net website. The only thing I can suggest is running CCleaner's file cleanup utility to see whether it resolves the issue.

    I'll run CCleaner again usafveteran, this time making sure all of the right options for Opera are check marked. I think I generally leave history unchecked.

    I've missed something,:-D since the repair(s) don't seem to be 100%.

    Maybe the answer is to backup the book marks, completely uninstall Opera 12.12 and do a fresh install of Opera 12.14. Seems like a lot of work though, just to have that Speedtest share image work. Although it might be less work than nailing down this minor quirk.

    TBH, I'm not sure Opera 12.12 ever did work with Speedtest.net. It had been a long time since I ran a speedtest, I ran these tests because I recently changed to a different ISP and from ADSL+2 to cable.

    At any rate, will run CCleaner and go from there.

    Your suggestion made me wonder if I had all the right options checked in CCleaner.

    The only one that I use in CCleaner is Internet cache and sometimes Website icons.
    Whenever Opera becomes sluggish or temperamental, I shut it down and use CC to clear the cache.
    That works much better than Opera's internal cache clearing.

    I never delete History. If you use Remember content on visited pages, that might cause some problems because of the
    huge increase in data storage.

    Yep, I saw that too. First for the mobile and later the desktop.

    Sorry for the delayed response guys.

    Thought I would do some comparisons of what CCleaner was cleaning up in Opera. First pic is the normal settings I use in CCleaner for Opera.

    http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/350/normalccleaneropera.jpg

    Second pic, are the settings used to try and solve this little quirk.

    http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/298/ccleaneropera.jpg

    This is what the Opera More* via the winapp2.ini file wipes.
    Code:
    [Opera More*]
    LangSecRef=3027
    SpecialDetect=DET_OPERA
    Default=False
    FileKey1=%LocalAppData%\Opera\Opera*\icons|*.*|REMOVESELF
    FileKey2=%LocalAppData%\Opera\Opera*\thumbnails|*.*|REMOVESELF
    FileKey3=%LocalAppData%\Opera\Opera*\vps|*.*|REMOVESELF
    FileKey4=%LocalAppData%\Opera\Opera*\temporary_downloads|*.*|REMOVESELF
    FileKey5=%LocalAppData%\Opera\Opera*\application_cache|*.*|REMOVESELF
    FileKey6=%LocalAppData%\Opera\Opera*\Logs|*.*|REMOVESELF
    RegKey1=HKCU\Software\Opera Software|Last CommandLine v2
    The results using the settings in the second pic, it took a long time for Opera to rebuild the files wiped by the "Opera More*" option and the Speedtest "shared" result is still blank.

    Opera becomes a little sluggish(for a few seconds) for me when I load a page like MG's WAYLT: No rants, just music page#1 or when I load one of those infernal news pages that contain a raft of slide shows plus, videos plus, pix plus, thumbnails. Temperamental definitely reared it's head with Opera 12.13.

    I haven't found a config setting that pertains to "Remember content on visited pages." Where is it located? In an ".ini" file? I didn't see it in Preferences(Ctrl+F12) nor in the Preferences Editor(Opera:Config). But, I'm going to have my eyes checked for new glasses next week.

    Given what is coming in the not to distant future for Opera, I don't think fixing this particular glitch deserves any more effort. It's more of a puzzle than a problem.

    But I do thank you guys for the input.

    I have never seen Opera more, and I have the latest ver. of CCleaner Slim. Maybe specific to Opera 12.xx only.

    Tools > Preferences > Advanced tab > History (left column) > Addresses

    Just below that is a check box for Remember content on visited pages.
    I have Addresses set at 1000.

    As for Sessions, each is stored in a separate file and sessions are in a separate folder.

    Under disk cache, try checking Empty on exit
    The default setting for Memory Cache is Automatic, but I changed mine to 10 MB.
    Disk cache set at 20 MB.

    Also, Network > Send referrer information is ON.
    Content > Blocked Content
    See if there is anything there pertaining to speedtest.

    It seems that this requires Adobe Flash, so make sure it's working and up to date.
    Flash Player - version installed

    Try using different servers for the test, selectable on the map.

    Good thing I'm scheduled to get my eyes checked isn't it?:-o Yep, mine is the same.
    Those are snap shots of CCleaner Slim 3.28.1913. The Opera more* option is part of the Piriform winapp2.ini file feature. Have a look here and here. If you decide to use winapp2.ini, it would probably be a good idea to also use the trim.bat file. The How to install and use Winapp2.ini guide, which is short, will explain what to do with trim.bat.

    Or you could use CCEnhancer to download the latest winapp2.ini file. I've never tried it so can't say how well it works. I don't think it downloads trim.bat though.

    Also, if you want to use the winapp2.ini file, in CCleaner > Options > Advanced, the option at the bottom of the list "Save all settings to INI file" needs to be checked.

    Cashe is set to Empty on exit. The reason it's a little over 2MB in pic#1 is Opera was running when I had CCleaner Analyze.
    Cache is set to Automatic and 50 MB respectively.

    Send referrer information is ON.

    Blocked Content, nothing showing for Speedtest.

    Flash Player working fine. Doesn't Opera use the same Flash Player as Firefox?

    Tried 3 different servers in Chicago, 1 in Wisconsin, 2 in Michigan and 1 in Ohio. Of course the speed results were different but still got the blank "shared" results image in all cases.

    This is getting to be a lot of work for just one small image. Every thing is working fine in Opera except this one small quirk at one site.

    Back again guys.

    FWIW, just an update.

    After deciding it wasn't worth the effort. I gave it one more try today. Low and behold the "SHARE THIS RESULT" worked as it should. Tried 3 different servers in Chicago, all worked.

    Still using Opera 12.12. The only config change in Opera is, "Pop-ups", back to "Block unwanted pop-ups" from "Open all pop-us".

    CCleaner has been run three times since Sunday, in normal(see first pic post #7) mode as apposed to the settings in the second pic in post #7.

    The computer was last shutdown/re-booted after running CCleaner with the settings shown in the second pic in post #7 although it has been in stanby periodically.

    My first thought after this happenstance was, maybe ISP trouble, but threw that out since Firefox never had any problems.

    Guess this will just be chalked up to category "Huh?"
