Well, I shall go into anexplanation of how this occured, so here goes,

A site I frequently apparently pissed off someone who obviously felt getting revenge on the members via making every page of the website download a trojan onto your computer was the proper response. Since I'm on 56k, I can only update my virus protection every so often, so I spotted the trojan DLing, but was unable to stop it (even on 56k it DLed in less than a second) and my protection didn't spot it. Tried removing it via software and no dice, so I removed my comp to set it up at the DSL at my Dad's office (direct connect so nothing could spread to other systems). When I booted it up I got a fatal system error at the screen where you select your profile.

So, since I can't remember how to boot it up in DOS, and none of the F# options I can recall have anything that helps, would any of you know how to force a system return to a previous state without having use of the operating system?

I believe the Trojan was named "SantaClaus[1]"

Thanks in advance, not exactly how I expected to spend my New Years, heh.

You don't say what your OS is, but assuming it's some version of Windows tapping the F8 key continuously while it's booting up will open it in safe mode. If you can get it to boot in safe mode, scan with your AV, and any antispyware scans you have. Hopefully that will remove the Trojan.

I have a 56k modem, and I check my security programs for updates every day. It doesn't take that long, being on dialup is no excuse.

Nope, safe mode results in fatal error, booting up with last known working config results in fatal error. All I can think of is reinstalling the OS.

And seeing as how I was pretty tired, and there was no edit button for topic posts... the spyware I can get rid of, it's the trying to actually get to a spot in my comp where I can remove it is the problem.

And yea, it's Windows XP Professional.

Lovely, and I can't find the XP CD (not with my bundle of stuff that I thought contained everything).

I would assume any XP Pro CD would work?

Anywho, off to go find someone else's XP Pro CD.

    Edit: Thanks btw.

Mother loving eh, I found an XP Pro CD, but after changing around my settings in f2 setup so CD drive loads up and later trying boot menu to boot CD drive, it keeps ignoring the CD in the drive and heading to the hard drive.

All I can think of is finding my own disc, or perhaps I'm missing something.

Are you sure you put in a bootable CD?

This is really not a topic for the malware forum. I know it was moved here already but your problems really not appropriate for this forum. I'm going to move you back to the Software Forum. And if your CD drive is not working, you may need to try the Hardware forum. Are you sure the CD drive was in working order?

Lesse, it's the Reinstallaton CD, and the CD drive works, but the DVD drive above it needs it's lens cleaned. It could be ignoring the CD drive and going for the DVD drive instead, but it is saying CD Drive. =/

I'll check some other stuff and for other discs.
