WAIT!.... I just realised I posted this in games :-D

This post has nothing to do with games and should be in the lounge.

    Sorry.

Now this is a hypothesis. ;)

Lets say you work 5 days and 6 days per week alternating.
Lets also say you work mostly 10 hour shifts and at least 1 , 12 hour shift per week.
Now, for the last 2 years you have had every wednesday off as your "Regular" day off each week.
A couple of exceptions due to staff shortages or some such.

Lets also add that the posted schedule is very laps in it's punctuality, with extended periods of no schedule at all. So for the most part the staff just works the same every week.

So one week the schedule isn't posted until Tuesday, you already work the monday which you were correct in arriving and leaving times.
You notice that due to the week in question being a holiday week, the schedule says no one has their regular day off.

Now lets say you have made plans with your family and just for arguments sake, one of your family wont be spending any time with you for a few months due to school.

I'm going to throw this in for an extra hurdle: If you wish to talk to the higher up about it, you can only do this via email on Tuesday.

    ------------------

    What do you do?

Do you work it anyway and just bitch and moan about it?

Do you just accept it and cancel plans and happily go to work?

Do you call in sick stating you could be contagious and possibly terminal?

Do you refuse to work, explaining your plans had already been made?

Do you make a plea explaining your pre arranged plans, knowing full well it will be turned down?

    Other?
    ----------

This is for a project I'm working on..... rolleyes

If this was the first time, option 1.
If it had happened several times before on a somewhat regular schedule, option 6.

    What option 6?
The one where you open a king-size can of whoop-*** on the person responsible for posting the schedule.

Is the work so critical that someone's life depends on it and/or you're the only person who can do this worK? Anyway, since this could be shift work sweeping the office or shelf stacking then stick to union or procedure rules and state that the schedule is not a properly formatted EAM (sorry Crimson Tide moment) and continue to your regular planned schedule that everyone already knows about and should be planning around anyway. Is there also an emergency callout procedure should they absolutely need you on your day off?

Sadly retail work or any workplace these days is not a uniform place to work in relation to work schedules, the bosses take the pee at times, I feel for you Ned in being in part forced to work in a schedule that's not your normal one.

The issue in part these days is "bitch and moan" and they will likely get rid of an employee and take someone of the masses of unemployed on in your place, too many folk fighting after good jobs these days and bosses know this and exploit it, but what can you do.

Since it's not like it's a weekend, I'd probably go with option 20 and first see if someone would be willing to switch with me before going to a manager.

I managed in retail and unfortunately there are definitely no definites although I think it's pretty crappy that the schedule isn't out sooner. I guess I'd also make sure going forward I got in a request for a day if I knew I had plans.

So apparently you guys worked out I was talking about me :-D

Well I went with a typical British response.

I refused to work outright, explaining I had already made plans.
This didn't go over too well lol, not that I really care.

I got a sort of written warning for it, which annoyed me especially since another Employee went with the "Call in sick" option and no one said a thing.

    So much for honesty huh.

I just made this thread after the incident to see what your guys opinions were on the subject.
    I'm afraid I have always suffered from Stickit-todaman-neosis :-D

When I worked a job that had a schedule posted, never once did I not know what it was...that's very weird for me. I think I'd have been speaking to a manager (probably not the one responsible for posting the schedule ;)) long before now if that was the case. I would have done the same as you, telling them that since they don't bother to post my schedule I assumed it was the same as it always is when they don't bother to post it, so I made plans for what has been my traditional day off for years.

Of course, I'd have taken it a step further, and every time the schedule isn't posted I would just not come to work until someone actually told me I had to. I bet if everyone stopped showing up on Monday they'd figure out they should post the coming week's schedule by Friday at the latest.

And I would definitely appeal the written reprimand. If they can't be bothered to tell you when you're supposed to work, then it shouldn't be your responsibility to track them down to find it out.

Honestly?rolleyes I'd keep quiet and do as they say if the economy is anything like over here.

Don't make plans until this thing blows over:-D

Go with the flow don't makes waves,if everyone has their day off then you have your day off,if not you single yourself out and they are looking for any excuse to can people.

That's my honest opinion, its a selfish opinion really I just want you to have to means to keep paying your broadband you you stay on the forum:cool

For practical reasons, I'd probably go with Rikky's philosophy. You can either "take the the high moral ground" and stick up for your perceived rights, and presumably take on whatever consequences, or go for the "I need this damn job/money" option.
I'd just grin and bear it, unless it happens regularly, in which case, I'd be looking for alternative employment - then tell them what I REALLY think, LoL!;)

lol, why thank you Rikky :-D

To be honest I think the job is wearing thin, I've been constantly late over the past couple of weeks, really not trying very hard.
Not as an FU, but more because I've lost heart in my job.
Sooooo so much BS from Owner, Management and staff alike.

I'm very logical and the illogical behaviour and ideas are driving me insane, not to mention people are getting more arsey and it's pissing me off.

I could go into a major rant here but I'm not going to.

Lets just say I have less than job satisfaction.

Rikky as you well know I cared a lot about my service and really tried to understand what the customer needs and supply them with the best product for the price they wish to pay AND explain exactly what it's going to help with and/or work for.

Basically, my boss doesn't want me to give awesome customer service, he wants me to make the sale quickly.

I even got told I'm "Too technical and talk too long".
Sorry for offering a clear and concise understanding of a product, explained in terms and analogies people can understand.
The boss is ALL about money, I've always been about customer service.
So our ways are starting to split.

As I remember, you sell work boots and other shoes, yes? I happen to have a guy at my local store who does exactly as you do...I've never spent less than 20 minutes with him even if all I'm doing is going in to buy socks. And you know what? I have referred easily 30 people to him for business, all of whom have made major purchases and in turn referred other people to him. I have no idea how much business they've gotten because of him taking the time to understand and explain exactly what is needed and what would be best, but I'd be willing to bet it's a nice little chunk.

Your boss is an idiot. :-D

That's exactly the way I see it, I have quite a few people who will request me or even come back if I'm not there.
Ok some people might not want to hear it but I think I judge quite well how much info a person wants.
I get at least 5 guys a day extend a handshake as they leave. Kind of says something when we're only talking about footwear.

The shoes you sent me are amazing still, I can still feel the support when I walk and when I switch to my old trainers now they feel like wobbly soft putty:major

Your "boss" will see his mistake when sales drop and the regular customers no longer stop in.

Just send him a GTX480 and he'll hook you up:-D

May as well come clean,I swapped my GTX480 for a couple of pairs of saucomy running shoes that Ned supplied,it was an interesting fun venture:) Unfortunately most of our money went to our respective governments, mine to HM revenue and customs and Neds to the Canadian postal service:-D

So I guess we've done our part to keep the world out of recessionroflmao
