Opinions?

This is probably the wrong forum for this but please bear with me..... I live in the country and I'm looking into wireless internet. The company I'm looking at has a package for 512K up/down for $49.99. They also have 256 up/down but I'd at least like to have the 512. Now I know that's guarenteed but it's all I can get. My computer is currently at my sister's (they have cable) and it's a burden for them and myself Couldn't deal with dial-up. $50 /month to steep?? This is only thing available besides satellite and those prices are ridiculous.

 

i pay 50$ a month and get 2032.9 Kbps with http://reviews.cnet.com/Bandwidth_meter/7004-7254_7-0.html ... although w/ firefox bandwidth tester extension I get between 250-1000k .. but 50$ for 512k isn't too bad .. as for normal internet surfing that's more than enough, unless you are going to use your computer to host a website and/or as an FTP server that gets alot of traffic you should be fine

 

Mostly it would be for surfing and chatting. I do play Counter-Strike, would lag be a problem with this much bandwidth?? I know distance from servers and other things need to be taken into consideration but just as a broad thing is all I'm wondering.

 

i used to play diablo 2 w/ a 28k modem w/ little or no lag and the lag I did get was mostly from the server getting bogged down ... but most games are designed to be able to be played over dial up, you would have to ask that question in a counter strike forum, but I'm guessing it should be enough

 

I have a 512 dsl connection all servers in the UK and europe ping at about 50 which is fine,accross the sea in the eastern us about 100 which is slightly high but I'v still had some enjoyable games at that ping,the quality of the server I found to be most important and staying off servers that let dial up users on because they bog the whole server down for everyone else,no offence dial up users.
