I currently have an AMD 2.4 XP with an ATI 9600. I am going to purchase a video card that will carry me over to my upgrade in a few months that will be an AMD 3400 64 or thereabouts. As per these benchmarks that someone sent me in my previous post I think the 9800 Pro will be a prudent choice: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-06.html It is in some cases twice as fast as my current 9600. It looks like I can score one for $179.99 after rebates. I know that there are faster cards, but for the money this seems like a respectable amount of performance in regards to price.

Any opnions on the 9800 Pro with either an AMD 2.4 XP or the AMD 3.4?

    Thanks.

I have one and love it. Plays everything I've thrown at it so far with out a hitch.

get a 6600GT, its better than (or on par with) a 9800XT and the same price as the 9800Pro.

If I were you, I'd save my money. Since you are going to get an Athlon 64 system, you may want to wait and get a PCI Express video card since some of the better motherboards don't have AGP slots on them. Only PCI Express. Also, IMO, a 9800 Pro is not worth the money over a 9600 Pro. Don't get me wrong, I've got a 9800 Pro and love it, but I wouldn't upgrade from a 9600 Pro to a 9800 Pro.

XFX for $179... granted its Buy.com and they can be slow on rebates... but they're pretty reliable if you keep on their case.

if you dont like buy.com... same card at ZipZoomFLy (VERY reliable) for $184 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=321018
