Optical Drives aren't working....

About a month ago my optical drives stopped working. One drive is the original dvd/cdrw and the other is a dvd writer. I installed the latter drive myself early last year, and have as recently as October successfully copied/recorded a DVD for a friend.

I haven't installed any new hardware, my virus scans are up to date(Norton, of course:-o), and haven't even knowingly installed any new software.

The two drives show up in both the BIOS and My Computer, but when I put in a cd or dvd, the drives won't read them and asks me to "please insert a disk into drive x:"

Have you checked the IDE/SATA cables?

 

Yes, the IDE cable is seated firmly. I even tried a different cable and had the same issue....

 

The next thing to try is to reinstall microsofts generic drivers in case they became corrupted somehow (power outage shut down PC). Go into your Device Manager and find the rom drives and right click to uninstall them and then reboot your PC, windows will reinstall the drivers.

 

Thanks for the reply. I tried that as well, they still don't work. When I boot up in diagnostic mode, in msconfig, they both can read a cd. Weird, so now I'm thinking virus or spyware.... Any other ideas out there?

 

Please Help!!! Someone has to have an idea!!!

 

It's not a hardware issue, so it must be software... Virus or malware? Can somebody help? I'm getting desperate! Thanks for any replies!
