Optical Drives can't see data

About a month ago my optical drives stopped working. One drive is the original dvd/cdrw and the other is a dvd writer. I installed the latter drive myself early last year, and have as recently as October successfully copied/recorded a DVD for a friend.

I haven't installed any new hardware, my virus scans are up to date(Norton, of course), and haven't even knowingly installed any new software.

The two drives show up in both the BIOS and My Computer, but when I put in a cd or dvd, the drives won't read them and asks me to "please insert a disk into drive x:"

If I boot up in Windows Diagnostics mode, I can read only cd's on both drives. Thanks for any input and ideas you may have!
