Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.22

Hi everyone,
I've been working on friend's computer, mainly to resolve a virus issue and that has been resolved. But, I'm also reviewing what all is installed on the computer to assess whether some programs can be removed.

The OS is Win XP SP3. Java 6 Update 22 is installed. I don't whether Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.22 is Java-related. I've done some Internet searching but still don't have a good understanding of what Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.22 is. Can someone shed some light on this?

From what I understand, Jinitiator is practically the same as JRE, but is primarily used only for dedicated Oracle apps and forms.
My guess would be it's a likely candidate for deletion if this is a normal, non-workstation machine, and especially if it's not being used as a development platform.
Is Jinitiator showing up in startups? If so, you could disable it there, see if there are any adverse effects. If everything's kosher, I'd imagine it's safe to delete.

 

Oracle is the main software for the BB platform. Maybe your friend have or had a BB phone...

 

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll talk to the owner some more about what she uses the computer for before removing Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.22. She's a teacher and I believe she logs in to some grading system from home and I wonder whether that might require Oracle JInitiator 1.3.1.22. So, maybe I'd better try to verify this or just leave it alone.

 

Agreed: if she's accessing a platform remotely, Jinit may be needed on the local machine.
