    Morning,
I use a small key machine for cutting keys.
The files are stored on a 2Gb SD card.
I have a file which is the same cutting information but its only in one folder under Y and i need the same file now put in folder S
I have copied the existing file from Y folder, renamed it then put it into the S folder.

Looking on the pc all seems perfect in the S folder.
    Example
    S1
    S2
    S4
    S7
    S8

But when i put the SD card back into the machine and view the S folder i see the following
    S1
    S2
    S7
    S8
    S4

Why is S4 last and not between S1 and S7 which is its correct place.
As the file is the same but just renamed the date properties is the same so its not that.
I am unable to pin point the issue & the list above is just a small sample of what is in the S folder.

Any new member of staff would look where it should be,then not see it thinking this key cant be cut, not knowing its last in the list.

Do you know of any reason why this is happening please.

    Have a nice day...

So many informations are missing ...
What file system is on your SD card? What operating system do you use? What file explorer shows the list of folders in the "wrong" order? By what column is the list ordered (if any)?

    Just an assumption:
If your SD card is formatted in any kind of FAT system then files and folders might be enumerated in the order they were written to the file table of the FAT file system. (E.g. this is what happens if I use the Windows command prompt to list files instead of the Windows explorer.) This has nothing to do with the name of a file or folder and has not necessarily something to do with the date of the file or folder.
Maybe your file explorer or the file dialogue of a certain application works in the same way.

    HI

As well as the above great info and info we need, I would also right click in a blank space in the SD cards folder and make sure Sort By is Name

    Hi,
I didnt know what info to supply, please see below.

SD card file system is FAT
I use Windows 7 on my PC
Not sure about file explorer once card put back in machine.
The files on the list are sorted by Name,Ascending, also checked right click blank area Sort By,Name,Ascending.
All files show Date Modified 31/10/2013

This is all i can supply you at present unless you advise otherwise.
Below is the list of S folder of which i am working with,
    SZ10
    SZ12
    SZ14
    SZ17
    ZD10
    ZD12
    ZD16
    ZD18
As you can see there is no problem when viewing file on pc.

    Thanks for the help.

So what I understood is that Windows Explorer shows the list in the right order (as expected). Only the software in your key cutting machine does not.
Well then it's most likely the FAT32 issue that I mentioned above. Do you know if the machine can read any file system other than FAT32?

Yes Windows shows list in correct order.
Sorry i dont not know about the system being able to read other.
I have a SD card adapter of which i put in a TF card, didnt have correct size SD crad.
I selected to format it and i see FAT or FAT32.
Checking the original it is FAT
I then copied the files over and put the card in the machine which come back with a read error twice.
I then put in the original SD card and it read it fine.

There is some software out there to order files on a FAT32 drive. Since I didn't use any of them and also didn't find some here at MG I don't want to link to certain sites. Just search for "fat32 order files".

    Hi,
You say FAT 32 but when i read the SD card it just showed me FAT not FAT32 ?

Is it ok for me to mention here some software names so you can advise which to use or is it not allowed.

Actually I can't advise you. As I said - I never used any of those software.

    What you could try beforehand:
    - Copy the files to your PC's hard drive
    - Delete the files on the SD card
    - Copy the files back to the SD card
This should also reorder the files.

Just to be clear - I don't want you to copy the whole card. Only all the files of the folder that shows this issue.
