coupla minor purchases online -- USB flash and USB modem for now. thanks to those who recommended Newegg...izzat the best/lone place for this?

i checked kahlon out of habit, but their flash drives were more than brick-n-mortar (bestbuy/staples nearby), and they don't carry modems.

newegg has both at cheap prices. namely:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825180014

any opinions/warnings/shouts of "NO, DON'T!" before i commit to those?

btw, i should note that i also checked LAPTOPS, and even newegg was more than brick-n-mortar! which is just as well, seeing as i already BOUGHT it....

No idea on the modem, but I put a flash drive suggestion in your other thread. I haven't heard a lot of good stories about those Kingston cheapos.

really? most of the reviews there are quite positive...unless they're all just kingston employees posting....

sole complaint from most of them is that the 8G is actually 7.2G!

    (insert dirty joke here)

As far as "Newegg" goes as a business it has been around for at least 7+ years (in my experience).......it is persisting even through tough times. Hard to find a negative experience about the sale and delivery of a product wrt. BBB is your point of call if something goes wrong.

I know of several of the cheap Kingston flash drives that have been defective/faulty.

Kingston is a brand that does make good products, but also has a cheap, budget line of products as well. It's like a $3 difference between the Kingston and the A-DATA. I purchased several 4GB SD cards made by A-DATA a few years ago, and they've been flawless.

i tried TD, but the modems there were in the same range as the remaining newegg listings. in particular, they don't seem to carry that encore model.

what's the deal - did i just HAPPEN to decide upon a cheapo modem the very week that the whole CONCEPT has fallen out of favour ("one buggy-whip, please!"), or is newegg pulling a fast one on me?

i've tried searching encore web-wide, but the only ones showing a price close to newegg's are asking 7 bucks in postage! (newegg was ZERO) on a 15 buck modem!!

is newegg unique in occupying the "supercheap" end of the market? once they discontinue it, is it pretty much game over?

    :(

PS: i'm happy to note that the other half of the order -- flash drive -- is back in stock!! small mercies.

I own a couple of Corsairs and about 6 Kingstons. I don't notice a difference between the brands.

ironically, the kingston one gets much better reviews. plus it's a 5-yr warranty where the corsair is 2.

otoh, kingston is only 7.2G (i guess) where corsair is true 8G....

    decisions, decisions!

(still more concerned w that @#$%^&* MODEM!)

In this time most of the people use kingston because this is very comfortable when we have any one problems then we change easily because this is big and have many distributor in every country.

hoo boy, i am really not good at this. sat down to commit to the corsair tonight, only to see "sold out -- removed from shopping cart".

    :(

i suppose i'll go with one i saw at staples for 11.90 then. buck or two more than that kingston one still (sales tax state), but the fact that it says "34.99 SALE 11.90" really gets my attention. to date, i haven't even seen a 16.99 one marked down that far!

unfortunately, they only had one(!) sitting there that i could find, so i suppose i'll see "sold out" when i get back to the store tomorrow....

hey, is newegg incredibly FLAKY? my shopping cart, for example, shows a diff total until i get inside it. that is, it reads "2 item(s) ($26.50)", say, until i click on it, then it shows the 2 items with their proper total of $22.50. what thu...?!

can't even tell where it's ascribing that other 4 bucks, seeing as it disappears every time you take a look.

is this another bait and switch where i'm gonna find i've been charged the higher (wrong) number upon checkout?

additionally, it posts a link for a rebate which has ALREADY EXPIRED. i caught this in time and tipped off their customer support, but 24 hours later they still haven't fixed it. i can only imagine the THOUSANDS of customers who go ahead and buy the product, only to find that they've been REJECTED for the rebate a month from now.

i still like the prices, but MAN, am i nervous about handing over my payment details!

I've ordered from Newegg dozens of times, and have only had an issue with price handling once, which was resolved by online customer support fairly quickly. Your final checkout price will be viewable before you actually click the payment button, if there's any worries about the total.

OK, thanks. i went ahead and ordered despite all the hiccoughs.

my contentment at getting the absolute cheapest price was short-lived, however, when i noticed there had been a 10% off promo code the first few days of the rebate. so my $14.99/9.99ar could have actually been $13.49/8.49ar had i worked this all out faster.

oh well, live and learn. i'll know better next time....

I've used newegg since they came online, and have not had any problems with them. I've also heard that their customer support is top notch.
For comparison shopping, i've used pricegrabber.com and pricewatch.com
just have to pay attention to details, and sellers, otherwise it's pretty good. Newegg doesn't get listed as much on those anymore, but it's still a good place to look.

as it turns out tigerdirect DID have the same price in the end. as did compusa.com (which i guess they own as well) and circuitcity.com.

these 3 have slightly diff end dates, tho, so if anyone still wants this deal, it might be easier with one of them. newegg's ends tomorrow, and they were sold out (AGAIN!) last time i looked.

even with all the diff rebate periods, i couldn't manage to find one where the "10% off" is still going. :cry

oh well, i guess 20+ hours spent trying to save $1.50 is enuf....

hey, what's the deal on that "encore" modem? is the company going out of business?

after newegg discontinued it, i looked around and found that everyone else seems to have dumped it as well. out of this entire list, for example, i think ayagroup is the only one still carrying it. 2 dollars LESS than newegg, no less! (well, not after 6 bucks shipping, but still)

    anyone ever HEARD of them?

and what's the deal on this one? is that a modem or not?

sure LOOKS like it, but waaaaay too cheap and it's listed under "cables and adaptors".

    :confused

anyone ever heard of THEM for that matter?

It is, indeed, a modem but it's a 56K modem used for dialup Internet connections. Are you on dialup? If so, you have my sympathy.

  21. CatT

CatT I can't follow the rules

well, yes, it's a dialup modem, that's the whole POINT.

but they tend to run $40 and up; even the cheap ones are $25. the Encore was unique in that it ran $15-20, but everyone besides newegg tacks $6 or $7 shipping on. so we're back to $21 minimum, even if it HADN'T been discontinued.

then this one pops up with NO NAME for only 9 bucks...with FREE SHIPPING!!

i don't trust it. is "TMart" a legitimate site?

it appears to be some no-name company in china (googled that sku number), but even so, i'm suspicious. Encore, etc., are also chinese, and 3-5 times the price.

    -----
btw, the other (flash stick) newegg order showed up today. they said 4-7 business days -- this was less than 2!

    i feel like complaining. :p

Not sure what the "whole POINT" is. Not many people use dialup Internet access now and I just pointing out that that modem is for dialup just in case you were thinking it would work with a DSL or cable Internet service.

i have wifi out and about in the real world (office, school, coffee shops). dialup is an emergency/freebie backup, good enuf for home. i don't want to lose it, and was startled to find it lacking from all the new laptops. (old laptop had BOTH)

i had not confused the item with anything DSL-related.

someone recommeded the Encore, but it seems to have vanished from the planet the very week i was ordering. now i'm trying to find Plan B.

oooh oooh oooh, plodr, u da man!! $14.98 and NO shipping?! that's even better than the newegg one was.

funny, since WM's so dang expensive in the realworld. i dunno where they ever got a reputation for anything being cheap -- certainly not the branches near me! i did the rounds at best buy, staples, target & 3 walmarts back around day 2 and the cheapest i found was $49....

i'm gonna jump on this right away unless someone can vouch for that TMart site. obviously i'd prefer $8.49 w no shipping, if it can be believed. but $14.98 is still great.

    moocher grassy's a$$! :-D
