You guys are smart, and maybe you can help me out on a quick question. I'm creating a structure of (E)-3-methyl-4-hexen-1-yne but I have no idea what the (E) is doing in front of the name. I'm fine with everything else, but that (E) is throwing me off and I can't find it anywhere in my book, chemfind, or google. Any help? :wave

I am no chemist or genius, but this link to DWR Research may help? If you can't get the answer here, try emailing them and asking :)

I googled the following: 3-methyl-4-hexen-1 and a couple of sites came up - with the (E) before the 3-Methyl

    Good luck

That is almost certainly an (E), as in 'E isomer', a common nomenclature used in Organic Chemistry.

If the substituents with the highest priority on the carbon atoms are on opposite sides of the double bond, the compound is the E isomer. (From the German entgegen, "opposite.")

As opposed to :- If the substituents with the highest priority on both carbon atoms are on the same side of the double bond, the compound is described as the Z isomer. (From the German zusammen, which means "together.")

Somewhat similar to the 'cis'; and 'trans' isomer nomenclature, but relates to molecular priority system.

Wow, thanks Phantom! We've covered 'cis' and 'trans' nomenclature before but the E, and Z isomers were new to me. It's all making sense again. :)

Thanks for the help Grumbles. I'll have to keep your link in mind for future projects.

Wow I'm so glad I steered clear of chemistry in college after taking it in high school... Did well in the class but I just don't care for the subject!
