Hi, I have about 13GB of photos on my HDD, i have made backups, changed names, used more than one computer, and I am trying to straighten out this mess! Basically, there is a half decent file structure, but i have loads of odd copies or extra photos lying around. I want to keep anything which doesnt exist elsewhere and delete all my copies.

Are there any decent tools to help me with this? I use adobe photoshop elements 6 to manage and look at my photos, but when importing it doest recognise copies, so it is great day to day, but not so good for these big management tasks.

I spent all day yesterday deleting obvious extra photos and getting all my jpgs into a single directory, now how do i easily delete out the copies? I use folder size on xp sp3 and thats great, any help much appreciated and any tips on file management tools also!

    thanks in advance

A small word of advice: Whatever app you choose, DON'T use Windows Photo Gallery for this task. Anything you delete from WPG will be deleted off of your hard drive --- and it's very slow going, detailed, painful work in WPG. For some reason, Microsoft did not make this app very user friendly or useful, in my opinion.

To remove copies of files, I use Easy Duplicate Finder. I believe it's here at MG, but if it isn't, a simple Google search should find it. It's freeware, and scans files according to what the file is, not based on file names. Very useful!

    Hi

Auslogics Duplicate Finder is free and good option, think off hand EasyDuplicateFinder has become nagware from last few versions I have seen, maybe free still but has a registration price on the homepage of $29 (so not used it of late to see if its crippled in some form or not)

Think Photoshop Elements is still ok to manage photos from, Picasa from Google is good, one of the best is Adobe Lightroom, but not a free app.

Others are Photoshop Album Starter (dont know how it fairs with Vista or Win7 now), Pictomio also free has a few good tagiing options.
