Organizing files and folders on a computer

I thought I had just posted this question, but can't find it.

I am quite dis-organized and especially in the area of my computer. I have 5 hard drives currently.

I thought a method might be as follows:

    1. Make ten folders. Each folder would cover a broad area. Eg. I like woodworking, so that would be one folder.

    2. I practice law. Law would be another folder.

    3. Etc.

Folders would be in broad in subject. Sub folders would follow.

    Any ideas here?

    Thanks

Don't get what you're asking :confused

You should do whatever you feel is best for your computer, and what you're most comfortable using, rather than asking people to essentially tell you what to do in this case. I'd personally say that this is a good idea :)

Another idea might be to open up 26 Folders (A-Z) spread across your 5 drives.
"L" would include all stuff starting with L, like Law.
    "W" would include Woodworking.
    "U" for Utlities, etc.

Might work, and be easier to remember where they are. Bazza

That is basically what I am asking. I think 26 folders might be too many.

Are there any search devices/engines that are free that are better than the one that comes with Windows XP?

    Thanks

26 won't be too many. It all depends on the leading character of your desired Folder/Sub-Folder. If you don't use X,Y and Z for example, then no harm done. An empty Folder takes up very little hard drive space and can be ignored until you think of some subject that needs X, Y or Z.

As for a lightning fast Search for XP, try Cathy.exe at
    http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Cathy/cathy.html

It leaves MS Search for dead. Only thing against it is that is not self-indexing. Once a week or so, you will need to refresh the index/es.
This program is how a Search program should be done (except of the indexing ;) ).

    And only 46KB in size

I think the ability to have a good search device is the key. 26 folders or 460, if you can do an effective search you find it.

    Thanks for the info.

    You're welcome. :major
Once you have Cathy installed, and indexed, enter your Search criteria in the box, under the Search Tab, then click on Search and the results INSTANTLY appear.

Just remember to re-index weekly or so, depending on the volume of your additions or cahnges. Bazza
