I'd the origin starts with punch cards, you had a stack of punch cards and those job were submitted as a 'batch'. These jobs ran at night or when most of the computing power / resources we free to process the tasks. Moving forward computer got faster and could handle loads, batch jobs were set up to run with little operator intervention via scripting or writing a batch file.

Batch scripting came from DOS long time before the internet was born. I guess for that reason you will not find that much about its origins. foogoo is right, it indeed started with punch cards. Batch files work the same way. It's not a batch of punch cards anymore but a batch of commands which are processed line by line.
I assume AUTOEXEC.BAT was one of the first batch files at all. It was placed in the C: root and was called automatically. It created parts of the environment, started the keyboard driver etc. Until Windows 9x the DOS was the parent operating system where Windows was started from. Usually WIN was the last command in AUTOEXEC.BAT. That caused the loading of Windows.
You know I'm a few years older, but obviously not old enough that I experienced the entire history of batch scripting.
