Currently running 98se on PII. Upgrading to AMD Duron 900. Considering upgrading OS. Curiosity as to everyones preference.
    XP or 2000.
I realize I will get as many different opins as faces. But kinda looking for pros and cons of each OS.
All opins and expressions are welcomed.

    Thanks

Actually, I think we will all agree to Windows XP. It would be like asking whether to upgrade Windows 3.11 to 95 or 98, the newer 98 is better.

Also, 2k may be headed for extinction like 95 and 98, so to be sure you can get updates, get XP.

By all means, upgrade. 2k and XP are actually quite similar, with XP being the next iteration after 2k of the MS OSes based on the NT kernel. Both are far superior to the Windows-on-top-of-DOS architecture of 9x/ME - better stability, real security, NTFS file system is much more robust than FAT. Go with XP, it's newer and better.

Well, ah, I'm going to disagree. I have had XP on 3 of my PCs, which had all locked up more often. At school, we purchased 56 laptops, all of which came pre-loaded with XP. These laptops would not run right all, with a lot of lockups and periods of slowness. After formating and installing 2000 on the home and school pcs, the problems went away.
If you like a Preschool-looking desktop computer, go with XP. If you want a fast, reliable machine, go with 2000.

I guess we should have stressed that XP is the best, if you properly take care of it. 2k is just as awesome, but has less features (Pro vs. Pro)

Preloaded XP is garbage. Not because it is XP, but because of the crap that is preloaded with it. Everyone knows that the Preloaded crap bogs things down and makes them unstable. Hardly a fair comparison with a fresh install of 2000...

If you have older hardware that isn't supported in XP, you won't be as stable too. Same with applications. Then 2k might be a better choice.

And XP is faster than 2k (an arguable point).

Boots faster, shuts down faster, navigates faster (if you turn off XP bloat).

Some people like eye candy, some like to turn it off. With 2000, you don't have a choice, because there is none, save for native transparency and fading start menu.

Your saying basically it runs on no machines, hope you know how insane that sounds :) 56 laptops, all would not run, maybe the IT guys is an idiot, a common problem at any school I have seen. Bad bios settings, not updated, etc, could have been the problem. Preschool looking desktop? Um, there are settings, mine looks exactly like Windows 98, though a bit cleaner. Fast and reliable? XP is reliable, secure and fast. Also, when all is said and done, XP is built on the 2000 code, to say 2k runs and XP didnt is a bit odd since the differences are pretty small at the core.

The biggest difference is that they removed all the lines that said...

//Don't enable this section of code yet, we need to give customers a reason to buy the next version of Windows.
    /* <lots of lines of code> */

Go with XP Professional. I ran 98 for years and upgraded to XP Home about a year ago. It took me a while to get use to the look of XP but I really like it now. Easy to use and lots of features. I'm running Professional on my new builds and it seem real stable unless I do something stupid.

I fought the change, ran 98 for years, but then bought a new computer that came with XP Home installed. I found the one best thing about the XP is that it makes it almost impossible for even me to crash or screw up too badly and, believe me, that is an accomplishment :)
