First time Ive encountered this. Have a SSD, been working fine for years. Watched a film on it last night, switched off as normal, then today got the

no active boot drive was found, press cntrl, alt del

so Ive had this issue on other PCs and its normally a case of the boot HDD has been changed - not in this case. Long story short, it wont boot at all.

Ive used the windows disc (windows 7) and it finds the HDD as 0
Ive Googled, used Diskpart to find it (and it does) reporting theres 120GB free space and is "unallocated" leaving me to think its either completely wiped itself or the boot partition is damaged.

Ive tried following the advice to change the letter of the HDD (as if you type list disk it DOESNT come up). Seems it isnt coming up as a VOLUME to do anything with.

Anyone any ideas how to save/repair the drive from here?

Wish it could be that simple. Issue with the FIXMBR is that there's no OS to "fix". What I mean is that, if I were to repair my computer, CMD and fix MBR, the only drives available are X: (boot) and the DVD Im booting from. typing c:/ doesnt exist. However, if I go to resintall windows, the HD is there. If I type DISKPART and list logical drives..the drive is there set as 0 (but no drive letter), trying to assign a drive letter FAILS. So essentially I cant fix the MBR as the drive isnt classed as a volume yet.

First question is "what viewer did you use to watch the film?"
Most viewers like Divx or VLC won't change your system root settings.
    But Anything from Microsoft might.

    If it was me...
If one pair of eyes can't see it, try a different pair of eyes.
There are portable versions of Aomei, Macrium and I think iM Magic partition.
Don't touch a thing; just look at it through their eyes.

It might just be a config setting, it coulda been a bug in the film you watched or the viewer you used.

First thing I'd do is change glasses and take a different look at things.

I don't believe in coincidences.... but

    PS: what happened to me a couple of years ago;
When I had the same problem after installing a driver or a codec.... can't remeber which now.

Defrag found a couple of bad sectors show up on the drive...
They happened to be located in the boot section of the C drive.
Everything was still there on the C drive but I couldn't boot the OS.

VLC has never let me down.... ever

OK.,... one less thing (quote Forrest Gump)

It's a little more legwork now...
I used to be able to run Partition Magic off an A disc.
Sad to say those days (and the A drive) are gone.

Please please be very careful when booting up any partition or disc assistant or manager.
The geeks are screaming "backup backup" before you do.
keep it safe by just sitting on your hands and looking first no matter what you use.
As previously stated there are lots of apps available for disc and partitions management.
There's probably one available from the manufacturer of your hard drive. Might even be best choice for management/repair/recovery.
I've got 5 different pair of glasses installed here and they all serve a useful purpose.
