Hey, I don't know if this is the right forum, but I was hoping someone could help me out. I am kind of new to this and I am having trouble with my laptop. Here are my problems:

    1. It takes a long time to load.
    2. I can't open multiple IE browsers or download the latest IE.

I have 240 mb of RAM, 6.6.gb of free hard drive space and a 1.29 GHZ processor. I know it's not the state of th art, but my pc should be running faster, right?

Can anyone give me an idea on how to fix this? Thanks.

Which operating system are you using?
Windows 2000 , I am pretty sure will not run IE7- someone correct me if I am wrong.
XP will run o.k on 256mb ram, and the processor should not be a problem.
But, opening more windows at the same time might just be the graphics capability of your laptop.
Otherwise, the antyvirus program that you run could be hogging resources -
It would help if you listed all the programs that you have running on your laptop, and we could help to reduce the unnecessary programs that run all the time, by stopping them starting up with windows startup.

Yes. Windows 2000 uses IE 6 with SP1 and the last security update was in December 2008. You can't install IE 7
What is it? windows, the desktop, internet explorer, a program?

Should run faster is relative. How many startup items you have compared to someone else's. What security programs you are using compared to another's choices.
We need a lot more information before we can determine if your speed is the result of too many startup items and services and a hoggy security program.

Thanks for the responses. My laptop was working fine (w/ IE7) about 2 weeks ago. Then something happened to it, it stopped working completely, and I took it to some place to have it fixed. When I got it back a few days ago, I noticed I had an older IE on it. I think it's 6. When I tried to install IE7 it wouldnt work. When I tried to open another window/IE browser, it wouldnt work either. I am using microsoft xp. My laptop is about 5 years old. Right now, I am writing this on someone else's laptop. Mine is currently taking 500 years to dl a system update.

NOt sure if I answered any of your questions correctly. Thanks again for the help.

Take it back; it doesn't sound like they fixed it properly.

You need to find out exactly what was done.
If they merely wiped the drive and installed a basic version of XP with no updates, that would explain why you are running IE6. But that doesn't explain why you are unable to update the browser.
If your computer stopped working because of a problem with the hd and they did not replace it, it could be going really slow because your hd is dying. Did they test the health of the hd?

No, it doesn't sound like they fixed it properly. The guy I dealt with was not very good. And I don't feel like giving him any more money or dealing w/ him again. That's my fault.

I think you're right. It seems he did install a basic version of XP on my laptop. (Any way I can get updates on my own?)

What's the life exspectency of a laptop anyway? I've had my Compaq Presario 700 for about 5 years. Maybe you're right, the hd is dying.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Try this first
    http://majorgeeks.com/AutoPatcher_XP_Full_d4901.html
It will give most updates up to may 2007 , plus a lot more-
You may not have microsofts latest update tool, if an original version was installed
    You can download that later.
This great parcher is well worth keeping a copy of.
There are a few later updates to this , but this is the full version you need.
It should download reasonably quick from majorgeeks, then you run it (off-line) to update your system.
You will need to run it several times to get as much updating as you can- it will go up to .net 2 as well-
Then you may find it will update properly after that.
A laptop can run for as long as it is useful to you.
Hard drives can fail at any time- yours may still be o.k
I will come back again with a little more help

Microsoft do explain things that canhappen with a repair instal- and why updating does not sometimes work, I have not had need to use this , but thought I should mention it.

The browser does not allow me to open multiple windows. (i am responding to you from another pc) When I clicked on the link you sent -- http://majorgeeks.com/AutoPatcher_XP_Full_d4901.html -- my browser tried to open it, but it couldn't. A new window popped up, but the page repeatedly tried to open without success.

Once this happens, the browers gets all screwed up. Then i am not allowed to close out of the new window. Im forced to do a ctrl-alt-delete, but this takes forever to close. In fact, as i sit here writing this to you, my laptop is trying to close the window page.

There isn't a pat answer to that. I have one laptop I donated to someone that was new in 1999 and it is still working. I have one I'm using from 2001 and it is still working. It might just be that you need a new hard drive; everything else might be fine.

What happened when your computer stopped working completely? Describe any sounds and what appeared or didn't appear on the screen.

At this point, you don't even know if you have the same hard drive in your notebook.

Did you get any CDs with your notebook?
