Actually, you can't upgrade from a 32bit O/S to a 64 bit O/S. I am not even sure you could clean install from the desktop, as I am pretty sure that you'll get an error message as soon as you try to launch the software withen windows (no %100 sure about that last part, though). That said, if you back up your files and don't mind starting from scratch, you can definately boot from the DVD, and clean install. If you have an upgrade disk, there is a work-around to use it to run a clean install by booting from the DVD, detailed in another thread on this forum. But, just to be clear, if you want to upgrade and keep your settings and programs, sorry, no-go.

Here is MS's article about the upgrades from 32 bit to 64 bit not working:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930891/en-us

As an aside, I think it is worth mentioning that the program and driver support for 64 bit O/S's is pretty sparse at the current time. There are certainly very few 64 bit compatible games, for example, available at this time, and 64bit vista drivers are ever rarer. This may change in the future, however, as a lot more people are going 64 bit, but for now it is kind of a wasteland. Just a word to the wise! :)

Hope I have explained this OK, let us know if you have any more questions!

You can't upgrade from a 32bit to a 64bit. You have to do a clean install. That being said, you can do this with an upgrade but you'll have to install Vista twice for this to work. Also, keep in mind that 64bit will lag in drivers etc. compared to 32 bit.

EDIT: I see Gecks has explained it much better than I but the gist is the same.

Well...I wont go into a lot of specifics but I did a clean load to a newly built machine. Put Vista Ultimate 64 on it. Top notch board, top notch ram etc. Ran it for little over 2 weeks. It became obvious 64 was not ready for prime time, and even worse, 3rd party peeps were not interested in 64. They had their hands full with 32!! So I made a wise decision and did a clean install of 32. Perhaps in the future I'll move on to 64 if and when others do.

Oh....btw....going from Vista 64 to Vista 32 is an exciting experience itself. Seems MSFT didn't plan on that. I found a work around and assume you folks will too.
