OS woes

    The problem I have today is quiet discerning to me me PC has bogged or in more actuallity it has reverted to the Windows 2000 platform. The OS I have installed is Windows XP Pro 64x and after turning my PC off this morning (something I hardly ever do) and turning it back on several hours later I found that the platform had changed (yuk) IE7 defaulted to IE6 and all programs seem to be running in Windows 2000 mode. Could someone please help restore my system back to the XP Pro style?

    It sounds like you have two operating systems in your computer, windows 2000 and windows XP. Somehow 2K became active rather than XP, the OS you wish.
    Open Control panel, Admin tools, Computer management, Disk Management.
    Disk 0 is probably the hard drive in your computer.
    Look at the listing and you may see the 2K and XP partitions at the top. Highlight the XP partition and maybe under action, you can set it to Active. Reboot and XP should now come up.

    Okay maybe its not the 2000 platform it might be the standard XP I do not really know to be honest (green) but its not the same screen as it was before I shut it off. I followed the steps outlined and under disk management all it said was Healthy (system). I also found that it will not allow me to follow a link from my email. Although it will from the IE. Under type it says basic file system NTSF.

    I misunderstood. Somehow you have turned on XP's Classic start menu.
    Since I don't run XP, I can't tell you how to undo what has been done but maybe if you follow those steps, you get a choice to turn off the classic start menu.
