To change your OS, you'll need a different OS, be that a newer or older version of the software your using now, choices are

All the older 9x Windows ( Win95, 98, ME )

The newer XP, Windows Media Center, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows Vista

And the multitude of Linux versions, Ububtu, RedHat, KDE etc etc


The type and version of the OS your upgrading to wil determine the install routes you can take, in many cases you can just upgrade your previous OS, which leaves your settings and software intact ( some software/drivers many not fully work depending on the version you upgraded too ) its not the ideal route to take as many prefer a clean install of an OS, but this route will delete all of your files, settings and software, so you will need to back those up first before instaling the OS.

You will need if the route your taking is getting an Upgrade version of the OS your chosing to read the limitations of the Upgrade procedure as they differ from XP and Vista.
