I am learning to be a geek. I want to copy my DVD movies but when buying my computer I passed on getting a DVD burner - just bought a DVD player. Can anyone outline the process of copying DVD movies and what programs and hardware is needed. I blew my budget on my computer so I'd need to know the least expensive way.

 

You will need a DVD burner. I'd recommend one with with a Nero software package bundled in. Here are some dual-layer (holds the same amount of data (8.5GB) as a DVD movie) burners from http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-135-119&depa=1
You can also get them at most electronic stores, if online shopping is not your thing.

DVD Shrink http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4020.html works with Nero's burning engine to copy and burn DVD movies. It will compress and recode the movie to fit it onto a 4.7GB DVD+/-R/RW or copy it 1 to 1 onto a dual-layer DVD (they are more expensive and harder to find-that will change with time as they become more common). If you don't get Nero, save it as a ISO or video.ts file and burn that with most DVD burner programs.

 

Hey, thanks for the help. Now, please correct me if I have this wrong: I can replace my CD and DVD Rom internal drives with just the DVD burner, right? Is there no software that can use a CD burner to burn DVD's? What does Toolbox do? I heard some talk about it on The Screen Savers
