Other problems

A couple problems. My brother asked me to fix his computer and its a mess. It was given to him by one of his trucking buddies and he doesn't have the windows cd. Though, everything was in order when he got it.
First, I went to download IE6 in order to download sp2. But I get an error saying that an IE install is already in progress, this must be resolved before you install another IE update, please restart. However, I've restarted maybe 15 times today, getting rid of spyware, adware, malware, coolweb and viruses. Anytips?

Also, after running aboutbuster, ccw, kill2me and CCleaner, i restarted, and my toolbar is gone. I've tried everything I could think of, monitor settings, toolbar settings in control panel, restarting, but it won't come back. One interesting thing was that the little yellow bubble-shaped popups still come up and they point to where the desktop should be. The windows start menu buttom doesn't bring up the start button.

Computer is slower than normal.

Been there...Data Backup/Clean Install is probably your first choice, but for one reason or another it sometimes cannot happen.

What OS is it? Maybe System Restore (or a like program) is enabled? I'm not a big fan of System Restore but I'd consider it in this case. If enabled, convince him to go back to an old point to bring things back to the order you described when he got it. Remind him XP System Restore does not delete data files.

Sounds like you did alot of work. But it also sounds like one of those situations to break down the system and build it back up...Wouldn't be your fault though, sometimes you have to look in a hole to find out how deep it is. This laptop sounds like it needed to be repaired not tweaked. Best of luck. You know all this though. Your welcome. Captain Obvious signing off...
