I cant connect to the net, ip shows zero's and every now and then it shows ip address, but still no connection. I tired just about everything and even reinstalled windows and stil the same issue. I've read through the post here, and none mentioned reinstallation of os.The computer is a gateway axtstf 933. my question: could it be the motherboard or the ethernet adaptor?

Try pulling the power plug on your modem. Leave off for 1 minute, then plug back in.
Should force a reset of the IP address.

    What browser do you use?
    What firewall?
Is your browser set as a trusted application and allowed access with your firewall? Some can be too protective.

k, are you behind a router or just connected directly to your modem?
if behind a router, is dhcp turned on?
is the service dhcp client turned on on your computer?

if these all check out, can you run an ipconfig/renew from command prompt?

it's a straight connection to the computer. How do I check to make sure they are turned on? And if its a fresh install would'nt they automaticly be truned on?

You may be surprised at the things that can happen when you connect a computer directly to your modem, especially if its a cable modem that is constantly connected to the internet. that is, if you can get out to the internet... you should get yourself a router though.

check services by control panel - administrative tools - services. youre looking for dhcp client. it should be on.

check your NIC settings to make sure you're obtaining an IP automatically.

if those check out, try ipconfig/renew in command prompt.
if you're showing all zeros in an ipconfig output, youre just not getting an address from a dhcp server. how long has this been going on by the way?

all the services are on, sometime the ip will show 0's than an ip adress along with the gateway adress. I dont see an default adres s.
its been like this for about a month. what Ive been doing is just using this same modem to connect to my laptop instead
