I have been getting this error too often(never happened before) but I'm not sure whether it's my gpu (4870x2) or monitor (ViewSonic 22" - Vx2262Wm - LCD). Some games will not display properly until I alt+tab out and end task. What I've read states that the monitor is unable to sustain the current resolution which is 1680x1050 and that it should be lowered to 1024 or 800x600. Though well intended I think that info is out of date. My native resolution is 1680x1050. I got the only drivers available from the ViewSonic site and tried updating but the message stated that the current drivers were the best available for my component.

My question is, what other solutions are there?

Two things determine the display you see: the monitor and the graphics card. The ViewSonic at 22" is capable of large displays BUT can your graphics card handle that? That is probably what is holding you back. Post the specifics on your graphics card and some geek who knows graphics cards can probably tell you what it is capable of displaying.

    Thanx plodr.
I thought posting my dxdiag was enough to describe my gpu, but to be sure:

    Visiontek ATI 4870x2 - 2048 mem. - 750/900 stock spds. w/latest catalyst drivers
