Ok we having been upgrading our users from ms outlook 2000 to outlook 2003. I have run into a problem I just can't seem to figure out. I have installed all of the updates that are available and I have also tried to recreate the users profile. This has not done anything as of yet.

This is what happens. Once I open outlook after a few seconds it just crashes for no reason.

    Has anyone had this?
    what did you guys do?
    Thanks in advance!

yes, we just recently had this problem. one, is your server a windows 2000 server running exchange 2003 on it? This was one of our problems so we upgraded to server 2003 running exchange 2003. Then to restore the mailboxes we used an extremely wierd way that microsoft told us to do it, and some how it worked. We had to like delete the mailboxes out of the disaster recovery folder, then go into active directory and restore their mailbox, and then it would work fine. No clue why this works, but it does for some reason. I hope this helped and i that i'm on the same page as you so i don't confuse you. If this isn't what you're talking about let me know.

actually try going into control panel > mail > show profiles > remove any existing profiles > add a new profile with the correct settings for your environment. Try opening outlook again and if it still doesn't work we'll have to think of something else.

Post earlier was for some other problem we ran into so just ignore it. Sorry.

I really hope this works for you. sorry for the above post being the wrong information, but we spent like 23 hours working on our exchange server and i can't remember what was what, but this should help. if not let me know and we'll go from there.

have you checked the error log when outlook bombs? it might generate some kind of error. probably already did, but just wanted to ask maybe we can gather something from that.

I can't remember which .dat file it is but renaming that so it forces that file to recreate itself can fix this same issue in outlook. I never did it but saw someone do it with this same type of issue. It's like NTUSER.dat or something and it recreates the profile in a different way. This may fix each issue individually but the real problem is more than that. But to me it sounds like the outlook profile cannot access the server correctly. I'm not totally sure how that works though.

If outlook 2003 bombs, I'd check the event viewer, which was mentioned, but what wasn't mentioned is if the eventviewer had any entries related to this problem.

A probable dumb fix is to attempt a repair of outlook.

Another item, can the clients ping the server?

Does this happen with ALL users?

Does this happen with Domain Admins?

Alright I just wanted to give everyone an update. I have found the problem with the Outlook crashing on this one user. It seems to be comming from his outlook calander. I was not able to find the item that was causing the problem but I was able to recreate his calander and the crashing has stoped.:)
