    Hi All,

I'm Karen, and I'm in desperate need of your help. Something terrible has happened to my Outlook. For the last three days, I've been trying to figure it out with no success. When I open it, it starts receiving and after about three emails, it locks up. There is no error message, just an hourglass, and when I click to exit, "This item has stopped responding" window comes up and I end the program that way. I have a new item alert set for some emails, and I have noticed that when the alert window comes up, it stops responding. I'm not sure if that's coincidental, or part of the problem.

My OS is XP Home Edition. I have Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, AdAware SE, and McAfee Desktop Firewall and OnAccess Virus Scan installed. I run Diskeeper Lite daily, along with Spybot and AdAware. I have all Windows/Office updates installed. I've tried system restore with no luck. I've tried Detect and Repair after unplugging my Home Portal Monitor to prevent send/receive, that didn't work. I do have a legal copy of Office 2003, but my ex-husband has the CD with him in Iraq and don't know if I will be able to reinstall the program if I uninstall it. I've run out of ideas.

    Please help, I'm exasperated!

    Thanks,
    Karen

Since you dont have the Office CD with you the options to fix this is limited. Try clearing off the unwanted startup programs.

This is a hard one to solve with just the information you supplied. I don't think it's virus or spyware related because it looks like you're taking care of your computer ok. I wonder if there is an error being generated in the system error logs that would tell us more.

Go to start -> run -> type "eventvwr.msc" without the quotes.

Have a look at the application error logs and see if you think there is anything there that corresponds to your problem... if so, post those entries. I'm particularly interested in any entry for "Application Error" or "Application Hang" involving Outlook.

    Good Morning,

I appreciate all the useful information from all of you. I did (reluctantly and begrudgingly) start using Outlook Express last night. It is much easier than Web Mail, and hopefully only temporary. I really, really like Outlook 2003, and have become quite dependent on its features.

    Hello All,

I am still searching for a solution to my Outlook problem. I've looked into almost everything on my computer (that I'm aware of presently), but with my limited knowledge, I could spend months researching, and still not solve the problem. I did find what appears to be the Windows Installer Package for MS Office 2003 in C:\MSOCache\All Users, but have not attempted to do anything with it for fear of the unknown. I really don't want to lose my Outlook. If anyone has any thoughts at all about a possible cause or solution, please share them. I detest being defeated, and try to avoid it at all costs.

    Thanks,
    Karen

Without the Office CD alot of avenues of repair just disapear as the easiest first step is to use Detect & Repair ( need CD tho )

or a possible thing to try is have you ever updates the program to the latest Service Pack? ( SP1 + any further updates that are available )

    Try Office Update http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/officeupdate/default.aspx

Is this on a network or is this a standalone machine?

Anyway, you internet email is all stored in a file with an extension of .pst. If you were on a network with exchange then your email is located on the exchange server. If you were to search your machine for .pst then this file (should be rather large).

I think (if memory serves me well) that your .pst file is located in c:\documents and settings\(your login name)\application data\microsoft\outlook

Anyway, make a backup of that file, if you are worried about your email.

How large is this file? Is it over 2 gigabytes?

Note: I hope MS has fixed this issue of .pst files being larger than 2 gigs error.

Some additional info. Are you on dial-up? Also do you have a lot of rules setup on outlook?
