Outlook 2010 hangs "Loading". Stuck on Stoopid

We have a rather busy client netbook running windows 7 with MS Office 2010, the main app being Outlook 2010. very busy mailbox/database with lots of messages in store. worked ok until around end of Feb when it went wobbly.

the surface symptom is simple: it hangs busy while trying to load the profile. displays the "Loading" signal but cannot complete. so the app is unresponsive and is killed via task manager [wash/rinse/repeeeet]. tried to find 'scanpst.exe' but it is not on the system, just as it is not on my own daily driver [ms office pro 2007] despite Microsoft's disinformation. so next we tried msconfig>diagnostic, and on reboot tried "outlook.exe /safe" to no avail. same issue - goes to load the profile and hangs unable to complete the operation.

since this is Outlook 2010 [not previous] a lot of old fixes I have found are invalid.

    what should we do?
    thx

    Hi, zapp,

I can't help you fix Outlook, but maybe I can help find scanpst.exe.

It's often hidden, but if you type scanpst into the Run box it should run even if it's hidden, as long as it's in the search path. If the file is intended to be run from a command line, first type CMD into the Run box to get a Command box and then type scanpst into the command box.

To do a search for it on the hard drive, assuming that it's a hidden file, you'll either have to set Explorer to show hidden and system files, or do an advanced search to include hidden files and folders.

If the file really isn't on your hard drive, I think there are places on the 'net you can download it from.

Hope this helps some. That's about all I can help you with. If I'm telling you things you already know, I apologize.

    Good luck!

is the exe self-contained? that is, just find it, download the single executable, run it? how about version idiosyncrasies?

i hate to double post but I need help bad. i'm going to try reframing my subject line - either that or people are terrified of outlook :-D

    zapp,

According to M'soft "Scanpst.exe is installed automatically when you install Microsoft Office or Microsoft Outlook. Scanpst.exe is not available as a download."

This makes me think two things. One, it's almost certainly on your system. Two, since M'soft does not offer it for download, I would be very, very wary of other sources on the 'net.

You will find this M'soft article helpful. It tells you how to find the tool and how to run it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227

    Good luck.

P.S. Now if you'd asked about Outlook Express, I could offer more help, but I hate Outlook and refuse to use it :-D

It should be located at c:\program files\microsoft office\office14

is/was not - not sure why it would be on 2010 anyway. ostscan??
that wasnt the only thing missing - the Office Diagnostic folder is not there either.... gone. this is an HP notebook and Office 2010 was 'sprayed' on at the assembly point.
never knew what all was missing.

at any rate, the fix is:
    - rename the .ost to .old or something
    -restart Outlook
    - next time on the local LAN, reset the exchange mode to "cached" instead of the default non-cached.

a big busy outlook db like this guy has is generating way too much traffic everytime he goes live, especially as much of his work is via vpn from lots of iffy locations - rather amazing that it worked as much as it did for so long. also is tied to exchange 2007 which I'm told has a list of networking issues to begin with.
