i recently deleted what i believed to be a redundant connection in my network settings. i can no longer send or recieve email. yes i know. should have headed the warning "if it's working , dont mess with it!"

anyway it's too late for that now.

i can connect prefectly well to the internet and get email through mail2web but this is a right royal pain..

my bb isp is different from the previous isp but i retained this emaio address when i switched companies so the settings for inward and outward are set accordingly but it still doesn't work. my isp customer support (some geezer sat in calcutta) (i'm in UK) gave up trying after only a few minutes and suggested i phone MS ..this si not an option at their crazy prices..

any clues as to what i can do would be grately appreciated

Well, that shouldn't happen. Are both ISPs dialup? If so, mabye the connection you deleted was the dialup information so you could connect to their email through their servers. Do you remember what you deleted? Perhaps you could contact your old ISP to get the connection information?

Also, make sure your email program still has the SMTP and POP3 servers, that's probably what you meant when you said the inward and outward are set?

I have had problems with my Outlook before and call my provider to no avail. But like anything, it depends on which service tech you are put in touch with. Once mine messed because of an accelerator issue. I called, well the lady had no luck getting me going with all the changes she asked me to do. She gave me there email web server address where your email goes before it is loaded into Outlook. Well that was a bunch of crap because there stuff had messed up my Outlook. So the next day my wife called them, got someone else, and disabling one little option was all that was wrong. We were back to normal. So I would try calling your provider again and trying to get intouch with a different person.

You'VE jogged my memory! I think it did indeed say something about dialup. Because i'm now using bb i assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that i no longer needed this connection. i'll begin by creating a new connection with the old login details. thanks for your help.

I'd agree with GRW - my internet was down this week and I talked to 6 techs, The first said it was my computer, the second said I needed new drivers, the third said it was supposed to be that way, and I should by the FASTER high speed internet, the fourth said it was my computer even though I get the same problems on 3 computers, the fifth said it was the router that I wasn't using(the wireless signal from the router that isn't plugged in is interfering with the modem in the next room), and it took 6 people to figure out that it was a forwarding issue at the box.

Now, if you're now using cable, then the dialup shouldn't even work, since your computer shouldn't even be plugged into the telephone line anymore, because that would be a really stupid thing for an ISP to do...

just had my second session with ISP support. 1 hour 35. a failure! but at least she realised that the pop3 and smtp were different...

now then : i pay bt for my bb connection
but i have a onetel email address
so which is my incomming mail server and which handles the outgoing?

always assumed my onetel was my incomming as this is where everyone writes to offer me sex and slimming products!

bt tech support suggested otherwise and set up a connection to that affect but alas... still not working

    geek me dude!

    thanks

    LOL!
Well them, there should be no reason why deleting a connection should block your email. both your pop3(incoming) and smtp(outgoing) are from onetel(you connect to their email server), but you still use your bt to access that. Can you copy and paste the Pop3 and SMTP servers from your email client's configuration?

after another chat with the techies it seems they have a problem with the mail server! it is thought that it should be resumed within a couple of days.

I am speechless and off to the pub.

many many thanks. i understand abit more now about there being one (amazing) mail server and all bt does is get me there

    genius

    thanks again
