I have been using Outlook 2003 for years and this morning without warning my non-archived emails from the last year are inaccessible or missing. Various error messages on opening Outlook were: Delayed write failed. An error occurred that prevented ...outlook.pst from being saved. Close and restart all mail enabled applications. Cannot start reminder service. The reminders file could not be found. Calendar file missing.
My PC is running XP with service pack 3. I have tried Windows Server 2003 System File Checker and CHKDSK and System Restore to no avail. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830265 suggests it might be a driver conflict. I use Avast Antivirus. I have looked at the outlook.pst file using Kernel Outlook PST Viewer and oddly it contains junk email and deleted emails until 10am this morning when these problems occurred but no inbox or sent box.
Please can you help me recover my emails.
I have attached all the logs, Thanks.

Hi Annie05, if you think you have a malware issue, then copy and paste into Malware Removal Section,

1 > just before you post, click on this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

2 > and follow all instructions to the book

3 > if anything don't work whist doing this, just carry on, to the next set of instrutions

4 > when complete post any logs required

5 > Please give the malware fighters time to get back in touch, as they are really busy people

    GOOD LUCK !!!

Thanks for your suggestion. I have no idea really what caused this to happen. I have followed the malware removal instructions to come up with attached logs. When I tried to copy and paste message into new thread in malware it would not let me add logs again. Is there not simple way to move my thread to the new forum?

Thanks. That repair worked in combination with moving the location of outlook.pst to my external hard drive. Huge relief thank you. Incidentally what do you mean by third party SW like AVAST? Anne

You do not want the .pst on a external drive, due to if for some reason Windows forgets that there is a shared folder or external device, it will cause outlook to ask you to set back up your email, and in turn will wipe out your existing .pst file.

Keep your .pst in your local folder on the hard drive. Also, you should do a sfcnow and check S.M.A.R.T. info on the drive to make sure that it is not going bad.

OK, moved outlook.pst back to hard drive and did sfc and crystaldiscinfo smart review. Output says "caution", temp 42 deg C for C drive. Also Reallocated sectors count and Current pending sectors count are highlighted. What does that mean?

42C is on 107.6, so nothing to be concerned about, until it starts reaching 121 and staying there. 107.6 means that it is finally warmed up. As for the Reallocated sector count, Current Pending Sector count, can you post a screen shot?

Also, you can find a good S.M.A.R.T. tool on the majorgeeks.com side, such as @Active Hard Disk Monitor, at http://www.harddrivemonitor.com/ The link is safe.

Drives can go bad, but I would not worry about the temp, until it starts spiking into the high fifties and staying there.

Some drives do prematurely go. You can check with the manufacturer regarding them exchanging it out.
