Hi. I'm a newbie. Hope this is the right place to post.
Since yesterday I've been getting the weirdest errors from my MS outlook. ihaven't changed a thing in the past few days so its even more baffling. and i am a really basic user so i can't figure it out. the error message i get is:
Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
I read about it in the microsoft site but i can't see how it relates to me. help !?!?!

BTW- I am using Outlook 2007. All the posts i read were about Outlook 2003, 2002 etc.
    Thanks

    Hi

What is the email service you are using?
As at times without notice they sometimes block port25 as an antispam measure, so check their webpage for email settings for pop and smtp and make sure your settings in Outlook are the same.

Thanks Halo. i tried but it didn't make a difference. its still not working. when i did the test account setting i got an error message saying "SMTP error.... outlook can not connect...." and then the program froze... i'll try to get the exact wording again.

What port # are you using for SMTP and POP? I'm using 465 and 995, respectively.

See the instructions for Outlook Express here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=76147 Although this is for Outlook Express, not Outlook, Steps 13 and 14 and other parts of the instructions apply to Outlook as well.

    Hi,
Sometimes ISP'S block port 25 for different reasons, and don't tell the users.
you should call your ISP and ask them.

That's why I mentioned the other port #.

As far as calling the ISP, this is a gmail account, not a ISP-provided email account. I don't think the ISP would be blocking port 25 unless this was an ISP-provided email account.

I would post more comments on the gmail account settings but don't have time now. Will try to follow-up on this later, might be tomorrow.

Thanks everyone. I have tried changing the port definitions as per gmail's instructions but it doesn't solve it. i will now contact my ISP

Spot on! after an hour with my isp they admitted they blocked my port 25 for spam violations- but i barely use my pc!! so they suggested i have some malware that is sending emails from me computer. could that be the case? and if so how do i get rid of it?
anyway- now email is working again. thanks all!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

As it appears that you have a malware issue, please follow the instructions in the below link and starting a new thread in the Malware Forum, attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

      Notes:
    • If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode
    • If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Thanks Lev.
I have 3 computers sharing this router. Should i run the test on all 3 of them?

Yes but start a new thread in malware forum for each of the PCs and name them PC#1 PC#2 and PC#3 at end of title description.

But if Email is working then likely they deemed you as being ok as other users in your area with same ISP can be in same IP block and thats what they block without narrowing it down, so may not be you, but would still run the guide on the PCs or if it was coming off your PC then they will block again.

    Thanks Halo.
I'm really not a big computer user. does it take long to run these malware tests (and yes.. i'm also lazy...)
